UpDate 200R/400R Trans TV Cable in Hudson
F.Y.I.
When converting Hudson to the popular GM Turbo 200R & 400R Overdrive Transmission an inexpensive 'Kit' is
required to allow the use of the Lockup converter without a Computer. Attached is the Kit I used but there are many other similar Kits on the Market.
However, even more Important is to properly the Transmission TV Cable. Instructions are abundant Online but its critical to adjust the cable correctly before driving out of garage or may burn up within few miles...
The TV Cable has to have slight tension at idle and fully extended when throttle floored. Here is how I connected my Cable. Driled the rear Twin H Link then attached an 1'8" 'Link' straight up with 2 5/16 centers (Pictured) then attached the 'eye' of the Cable. Then I ran a Bracket up from the center Head Bolt to hold the Cable Housing. (The Cable Tension is adjustable at that top Bracket). There is a GM Bracket available Online to utilize but preferred making mine.
the measurements I mentioned work well...... Did a lot of research so hope helps someone else...

KDancy,
I have a few Turbo 350 and 400's adapted to Hornets with 3.00 & 2.87 Rear Gearing and work well, however these days everyone is installing OD so I did in my lastet St Rod to keep up with the Trend. Originally thought use 700E4 but too big for the center X so I I learned 200R4 same size as Turbo 350 and can be strenghtened (if necessary) to Drag Race with addition of stronger Sprag and clutch packs.
Since didnt plan to race this St Rod all I did was find a used mid 80's (which are more desirable than the early 200R) then put a new Filter and front Seal. (I learned the 200 front seal would sometimes fail because drain back hole was too small [Think needs be 3/16 or 4/4"). Additionally, there is a 'Retainer' available online 2- $3 to snap in front of the 200R seal for extra retention.I read horror stories if the TV Cable wasnt adjusted properly on the OD's so connected as mentioned above and works well. Overall the GM Auto's are the way to go today using Adaptors from Randy Maads or Danny Spring. The Hydro's are heavy and expensive too rebuild whereas the GM Turbo 350, 400 amnd OD's are available reasonable in most Wrecking Yards.0 -
which rear end ratio did you use for the OD transmission? Are you using the Dana year? tapered axles.
Did you modify the auto trans mount or?
Would like to do this on a future build.0 -
I use Ford 9" Rears. The 200R OD Hudson has 3.00 Gear now which is a little too high. Thinking of changing to 3.50....
I cut the original rear trans mount to lower then ran angle up to each side of the Trans Adaptor Plate. For Mounts I used '1" hard rubber' from a forklift mast then bolted to the original crossmember.Motor Assy is suppdrted at 4 points.
It would been much simpler to utilize the Turbo Rear Mount using a short pc of angle welded across the X, but I didnt want the long heavy Hornet motor/Trans assy suspended from the tailshaft....Just my opinion, but probably would been okay though.

FYI
<b>Flywheel</b>To mention the remaider of To Do's easily converting the GM Turbo Transmissions, have a local Automotive Machine Shop 'Index' the Hudson flywheel for the 3 GM Converter bolts and 'Bore the Center Hole' to the Converter's pilot Dimension.
Shift LinkageThere are 'Adjustable Linkage Kits' with Heims available that run from the Turbo Transmission Arm up to the Hudson Column connecting Arm, regardless if Auto or Std. Some fabrication may be required depending on column
