Anybody ever use a walton 3 flute tap extractor, Trying to remove the bottom of a spark plug out of a 308. Its right there in frontof me . I just dont have the right tool to get it out. Any other sugt. would be helpful. Do those flutes expand when you turn it to grip the inside amd just twist it out ? Thanks JOHN

Don't remember now what brand it was but I used tap extractors when I was in the service. Worked very well. As I recall the ones I used just had 3 legs that slid down between the flukes (the threaded portion). The top was a square so used a wrench to do a little working back and forth usually worked quite well.

For a broken spark plug you probably need something like an Easy Out rather than a tap extractor. Having said that screw extractors are only successful in limited situations, it depends very much on why you have a broken bolt or spark plug

If the hex of your spark plug twisted off while trying to undo the plug an extractor will not work, you will most probably end up with a broken extractor inside your broken plug.

  • Just a tip to prevent this situation ,put some anti-sieze compound in threads when installing.
And as far as current problem if you try a screw extractor use some freeze mist on plug remains first. This should break it loose from the head so removal is possible,

Occasionally there can be manufacturing defects with a new plug. I recent had the lower threads snap off a brand new plug with installing, well before it reached recommended torque. This on a Caddy flathead.. the plugs on this use a very small diameter and shallow thread. Fortunately, I DID use anti-seize, and amazingly was able to back out the threaded broken portion just with my fingers.

Of course you don't want to bugger up your threads in the head. Worse case, assuming it's a flathead, you could always just pull the head off.. you'd only be out cost of a head gasket.

Thanks for all the help, and comments. Can i get freeze mist at the auto parts store? Its been in a 60 year sleep, I just wanted to see if it would run before it gets torn down in my retirerment years. Something to keep me busy and out of her way// John
  • A good parts store like NAPA should have freeze mist,
