The engineering of the Hud straight 8 didn't really change from beginning (1930) to end (1952).
So do you calling the late widened block of the last couple of years "2nd gen" ???

I've heard of one here in E TN but haven't tracked it down yet. I'll see if I can get the details. It was from a step down I think.

Actually, there were 8 versions of the 8 cylinder engine. The only things that didn't change were the stroke and the journal sizes. The first was 1930 with 2-3/4" bore, 1931 had 2-7/8" bore and '31 -'32 had 3" bore. All these had chain drive cam, twin cylinder heads, and updraught carby. The '33 Terraplane 8 was a "one-off" with 2-15/16" bore, gear drive cam single head and downdraught. From then on all engines were 3" bore and gear drive. '34-'35 had the water pump in the head. '36 was first with water pump on the block, and flat head, but had same small port exhaust as earlier. Up to this all were single throat carby. '37 through '47 went to bigger exhaust ports and manifolds, and twin-throat carbs. '48 onwards were adapted to the Step-down design, with widened crankcase flange at the rear and stepped oil pan with wider section at rear, to fit over suspension member. Here endeth the lesson!

Excellent Geoff! But would you not agree that the Terraplane 8 of 1933 that evolved into that used until 1952 should be considered a new design. And as the parts from the later can be fitted or adapted to the earlier, I think one might say two generations--big port and earlier small port.

Yes, the Terraplane 8 was the first 8 cylinder with downdraught carby, gear drive, and mechanical fuel pump . However, it was a derivative of the 1932 Essex Terraplane, which was the pioneer model of this type. Both these engines still used the roller cam followers, hence had a different cam profile from the later models. The 1934 model was the first to use solid shoe lifters and different cam profile, which gave much better power and economy, albeit at the expense of cam wear.

There is one out of a '50 C8 up near Horseheads NY. I saw the car and I doubt anyone will put it back in, although it would be possible. I would imagine if someone called they could pick up the engine at a decent price. Contact: Corey at Six-O-Seven-four-2-Six-9-two-eight-seven.

    Hey, Geoff,
Your group from New Zealand at the San Mateo National had really nice black Hudson t-shirts. Ever think of selling some to members in the states as a fund raiser for your New Zealand group? Or having them in the club store?
    They really look sharp!
  • Vic,a little to far to go but thanks.
The 50 C8 sounds good though,a little closer to home plate...thanks guys.
  • I have a 49 from a c8. very complete with OD trans. and all components even air cleaner. It was running when I got it 32 years ago. but has been stored inside since, but hasnt been run. I give it a turn or two about once a year, so is not stuck. would take $650 where it sits. near Amarillo tx.

Regarding the T-shirts, yes we can take orders for those I'm sure. Will investigate and file a post on a separate topic for this.
