Windshield washer
I need some advice please. I can't get the windshield washer to work through the washer button on the dash. I have cleaned all lines and replace some hoses. They will work fine if I use vac directly from the intake port (wiper motor port), but not from the normal setup. I do have vac at the washer motor when I push the button on the dash, but don't know if it is enough. I took the switch out from the dash, took it apart and cleaned it. The engine vac at idle is 16 or 17 inches and steady. My vac gage starts about a 1/4 inch below the zero mark so I'm adding one inch of vac to the total. This is on a 51 Hornet. Thanks for any help. Richie.

Seems like you must have a leak somewhere if it works fine when hooked direct to motor port,

Roger, thanks for the help. I checked for leaks and couldn't find any. When I cleaned the dash switch I noticed that the ports were pretty small, but must have worked OK back in the day. If I take the vac hose off the washer jar with the engine running and hold the vac hose on my finger it will stay there, sticks pretty good. The intake port vac is stronger than the vacuum coming from the dash switch. I'll do more trouble shooting tomorrow. Thanks again. Richie.0

Richie see the attached Hudson Merchandiser pages which explain the routing of hoses and how the system operates. Hope this will be of assistance.

Thanks Oldfarmer, that is the way my system is set up. I will double check the hose sizes and make sure they are the same as the ones listed on your document. In your document it says to push the wiper control button on the dash while the wipers are in operation. I didn't have the wipers working when I was pushing the washer button. I'll try that tomorrow. Thanks again. Richie.0

You are welcome Richie... the wipers have to be operating as this provides the return path for the vacuum.0

Oldfarmer, I tried the washers with the wipers working and there is no change, washers don't work. I got two drips out of the driver's side today, that's a plus. I think maybe the pump is at fault, the car sat in storage for 12 years so maybe it just needs some time to loosen up. I'll keep trying it for a while and maybe in a few months it will come around. There are repair kits for most of those pumps .They were used by several brands ,

Roger, I have a spare pump and it does the same thing as the one in the car. I will just continue to use it for a while and see what happens. One thought I had last night was to add a vacuum reservoir tank and see if that helps, might also help the wipers from slowing down. Thanks Roger. Richie.0

Looks like I will need the firewall two hole grommet to complete my washer kit. Any Idea where to get one?0

do you have a vacuum pump installed as part of your fuel pump?

Bartibog1 no I don't have any vacuum help from the fuel pump, the lines were disconnected when I bought the car. Only using vacuum from the port on the intake manifold. Thanks, Richie.0
