Wanted to Buy 3.07 Dana Carrier
FYI
A person from Cleveland called me looking for a Dana 3.07 Rear End Carrier for his '52 Hudson Wasp.
He is changing over to Hydromatic from 4.10 Std Ratio and he thinks the 3.07 Gear will not fit that same Carrier...
Does anyone know if Gears Interchange or have a Dana 3.07 Rear for Parts that has correct Carrier that he could buy. He already bought a New Ring & Pinion...
Please let me know, or better yet, call Otto @ 330 524 9222, Thanks

Ol Racer, The carrier used with the 4.10 and up is different than the one used with the 3.07. I tried to find one this past year when I changed from 3.07 to 2.72 ratio and had no luck at all. I did not want to give up the 3.07 setup but had no choice. I love the 2.72 ratio with the Hydramatic and prefer it over the 3.07, but that's me. Bruce0

Ol Racer I have the correct rear end.0

I sent you a message regarding the Dana Rear;0 -
I think the highest ratio you can put into a 4:10 rear carrier is 3:73. Higher than that and you move to the next size carrier.
Brumac, are you saying that a 2:72 carrier is different than the 3:07?0 -
Kdancy, No, the 3.07 and numerically down, (2.72) are the same. I think the split is some where around 3.73 as you noted. I had a 4.55 rear axle assy that I stripped down and was going to put my new 2.72 gear set into but the ring gear inside diameter was way too large to fit the 4.55 carrier. The 308 engine has enough torque to run the 2.72 ratio. Bruce0

The Dana 44 rear, 3:07 ratio, also takes the 2:72 ring and pinion. This is what I have on my car. The hornet engine shows no signs of lost power. 2,000 RPM's = 60 MPH, 2,800 RPM's =90 MPH. 20 to 22 MPG. I can still spin the rear wheels. Walt.0

OK Chuck got it.0

On a similar vein, I have a 4.1 crown and pinion. Will this bolt straight into my '53 Hornet housing which currently has 4.55 gears in it? The workshop manual says to use a housing spreader, has anyone used one of these? I have changed the ratio of a previously owned '50 Pacemaker, but these are much easier to work on than the Dana it seems.0

After you have the rear all set to specs. you need the spreader to open the housing 18 to 20 thousands of an inch, warning, to do go over 20 as the housing will not return to size. When opened, install a 10 thousand shim on the left side, driver side, now the carrier bearing are pre-loaded. Will run quiet like a mouse. Walt.0
