Hi all,
I'm trying to bolt the cyl head back on a 308 Hornet engine and need torque specs and torque sequence. Any online repair manuals available?

1ST OFF DON'T USE THE ORIGNAL BOLTS IN THE 50'S THEY DID NOT HAVE GRADE 8 BOLTS SO SPEND THE MONEY AND BUY NEW GRADE 8 BOLTS

AND I ALWAYS USE THICK WASHERS

I'M SURE ALEX BURR HAS A MANUAL ON LINE OHHH ALEX PLEASE HELP THIS MAN !!!

THE PARTS BOOK I HAVE SAYS 70 TO 75 FOOT POUNDS I ALWAYS START IN THE CENTER AND WORK MY OUT TOWARDS THE ENDS BOUNCING BACK AND FORTH TILL I'M DONE THAT IS COLD AND THEN AFTER RUNNING IT TO GET IT WARM I DO IT AGAIN THEN AGAIN AFTER SOME MORE RUNNING ALL TOLD I MAY DO IT 6 TIMES
  • Wow, thanks for the information! I will take your advice and purchase the grade 8 bolts. I appreciate the help
  • Also, it's almost essential to tap-chase the threaded head bolt holes with a well-oiled tap, plus vaccuum out debris or back wash out all the debris/oil w/parts cleaner of some sort (brake parts cleaner might work well). This serves to remove rust and Permatex/sealer residules. Careful not to let debris run/fall into the cylinders.

NOTE: an idea is to keep a running vaccuum hose w/crevice tool located closely to the tap during the tapping process.
  • Thanks. I will make sure I chase the threads with a fresh tap. This is a great site with a wealth of knowledge. I'm pleased to have found it and hope I can return the favors down the road,

1948-1952 shop manual recommends 60-65 foot pounds for six cylinder engines. You can find a copy of this manual in the online library @ http://hetclub.org/burr/lithomepage.htm - look under 1948-1954 Manuals. The info is on page 3-40 Engine, right column.
When torquing the head torque it down to spec, then warm the engine to operating temp and re-torque. Do this at least twice - I'm sure somebody will recommend a couple more times.

Check the size of the bolts first. Later (55-6) 308's used 1/2" as opposed to the earlier 7/16".
The 7X race motors also used 1/2" and more than a few engines have been converted to 1/2" bolts or studs along the way.
