I need to rebuild the differential in my 53 hornet. Where might I find the parts?

Jim, that's a Dana 44 axle, used in both Fords and Chevys in years not long ago. Check with a dealer or NAPA.

A bolt broke between the ring gear and the carrier. Apparently one or more gears are damaged because it makes a knocking sound. Walt said that the entire unit should be replaced (DANA 308 rear). I am looking for suggestions.

  • People don't know this but the housing is the complete unit. All work must be done in the housing with the correct tools an info. Best to find a complete unit with the 308 ratio. Walt.

I have the heavy Dana case spreader tool if you need to use it. Necessary to remove the gear cluster.
  • Make sure you tell them not to spread it more than .020 thousands of an inch, because then the housing is ruined. Will not return to the original size, Walt.
