DOT 3 works fine. If you are rebuilding or replacing the brake hydraulic system, consider DOT 5 silicone fluid for system longevity especially if the car sits idle for long periods of time.

If you Google silicone brake fluid, you will find many discussions on the pros and cons of using it. I have pasted 3 ClassicCar.com links below. For me, the best argument comes from the first comment by hudsonguy, which is in the first link.

Just go with DOT 3. Some people have no problems with DOT 5, but seems like just as many, including me, have had big problems with leaks with it, even with brand new hardware. If it's a driver, use DOT 3. It's a proven fluid. If it's going to sit, you might want to consider DOT 5.
  • I use dot 5 and I have 142,000 on my brake system and the only problem is after 3 years I have to replace the stop light switch. Walt.
  • The very same DOT 5 has been in my Hornet since 1981, no leaks, none added, still works fin. It was put in a totally cleaned system. I think that is the secret . RD

Put me down for DOT 5. Unfortunately there are a lot of myths for and against DOT5 and most of them are bunk. The only time that DOT5 is not a good choice is if you are using it in a race car, as it has a lower boiling point.

I like the Dot 5 except for the leaks issue. It's real, though many folks don't have the problem.

I, like Paul have been using DOT 5, in my case over 30 years with no problems at all. The Super Jet still has the factory original brake light switch riding along on the back side of the M/C. But like others have stated herein, the system in the Super Jet was completely new - lines. hoses, wheel cylinders & Master Cylinder.

I guess I stand corrected on DOT 5. These people sell a DOT 5 compatible brake light switch. Have had one on my Hornet for 7 years. Gone through a couple of new masters, and a new wheel cylinder, but the brake switch has worked fine. http://www.ronfrancis.com/products.asp?dept=28
