Stepdown transmission mount
While wrapping up my brake work on my 50 Pacemaker, I discovered my transmission mount is totally shot. I was able to lift the trans and remove the lower portion. What holds the upper portion to the trans? I can't see or feel what's holding it to the trans.
Thanks in advance,
Matt

There should be a 3/8 bolt with a 5/8 head. If tranny was never out that bolt could have a cotter pin through it, Hudson's idea so bolt would never fall out. Hope it's gone. You will have to work through a round hole that should be in the rubber that is still on the upper half. Walt.0

Most of the rubber is gone from the upper half, but I can't even feel the bolt head. I'll scrape some more crap off and see if I can find the bolt head The steel upper plate is all that's left.0

faust,
I had the same problem when I replaced my transmission mount. I eventually had to dig out a lot of rubber with a screwdriver and a knife blade, but eventually I found the bolt head. Its a pain working through that little hole but keep digging, you should find it

My wife drove a 54 Hornet for her daily driver. That center bolt came out, and she made a left turn while downshifting to second gear and the clutch linkage came out of the bell housing.
She drove it home in second gear without stopping.
Needless to say , it got fixed right away.0 -
I had to dig out the rubber to remove the trans mount bolt.

To all on the std. trans. This little mod. saved my fan blade and front motor mounts.
First make a Steel spacer (tube ) that will fit snugly around a longer center mount bolt and, that will fit up into the rubber mount, Make the spacer long enough so that when the longer center bolt in tightened up into the transmission ,the bolt head will be even with the cross member center hole. If the rubber pulls apart , the bolt head will keep the trans. from slidding right or left. You may have to use a larger brill bit to drill the rubber out for the space to fit up into it.
A few dragracers used a long bolt that would stick out below the hole in the crosswember and add a larger flat washer to the bolt head in case the trans would lift up when shifted hard while in the Torque range of that 308 Stump pulling engine.
We had a local Hudson racer with a Real 308 7X eng and he would run the RPM up to 4000 side-step the clutch and the washer would keep the trans down on the mount.
Hope this is some help to all. Rudy0 -
Caution, Be sure that the center bolt does not bottom out it the trans, befor it is tight on the spacer or washer. Thanks.0

Sure enough, the rubber had collapsed and covered the bolt head. It took a few minutes worth of carving and peeling away what top rubber that was left. I threw in a used mount so I can drive to Pigeon Forge later this week, I'll replace it in 2014 when I change the clutch and install OD
Thanks for the help guys!0
