i kind of ran into a surprise today when i was taking everything loose on the 55 hash to pull the 308 with auto tranny . it has a enclosed drive shaft. i took loose the 6 bolts on the back of tranny flange. does the engine just pull foward away from the driveshaft? i already have a 52 hudson rear end in my project. it came out of a standard tranny car. how can i mate this tranny to th 52 rear with a standard propellar shaft end? thanks stacy k

STACY 1ST OFF WILL SLIDE OUT YOU MAY HAVE TO YANK ON IT A BIT YOU HAVE FOUND THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH A 55/6 ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION I'VE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO MATE THINGS UP USING THE 55/6 HUDSON/NASH HYDROMATIC I'M THINKING YOU COULD USE THE FRONT YOKE OFF A STEPDOWN DRIVE SHAFT AND SILDE IT IN TO THE REAR OF THE TRANS BUT THE TRANS MOUNTS ARE ALL DIFFERENT AS IS THE CROSS MEMBER AND IF YOU TAKE THE TRANS OFF YOUR GOING TO FIND THE CRANK SHAFT ON THE 55/6 ENGINE IS 1/2 SHORTER THAN THE EARLYER ENGINES YOU CAN USE A SPACER TO MAKE IT WORK

thanks again for the info. my hope is i can use this tranny with the engine. crossmember doesn't matter as i am going to be using this in a older car and will fab a crossmember. as well as the front engine perches. i have a extra stepdown driveshaft i modified a while back. i can try to attach the inner part that slides in the back of the tranny to this. i will have to wait to see what it looks like when i get it out.
  • hoggyrubber - Years ago I installed a '56 308 and hydromatic in a '38 Hudson 8 . It's too much to discuss on the forum. Give me a call (909) 984 5544 and can tell you what I had to do. Norm
  • If you use a different transmission I believe 21st century Hudson makes the adapter for the crankshaft,

thank you herm, i will try to give you a call later today (sat). sounds scary though, more than you can discuss on the forum. :)) like it's pretty involved. the condition of the engine and tranny are a pig in a poke. neither one is locked up, but previous owner could not get the engine started when i bought the car off him a couple of years back.
that's a good idea Roger. i will keep it in mind if it comes down to it. i would like to use what i have if i can. i am pretty set on making this project all hudson parts.

I put a 56 engine and trans in a 52 Hornet coupe. I turned the cross member upside down
and made mount brackets. I bought biscuit mounts from Napa.
I think I changed the tail shaft housing with the one that came out of the car originally.
I don't recall a drive shaft problem , but this was in the ,70's and the memory is a little weak.
  • Just thought of one other little issue you may have. I believe the exhaust manifold exits at a different angle to clear items in the Hash body. Just means the pipe will need to be modified .

the plan is for this to go in my essex so exhaust pipe won't be a problem. after getting this out of the nash body i was wondering how the heck did you adjust the valves???? it was so tight in that pass side. did you have to drop the rear cross member? what a pain that would have been.

    Hydraulic lifters.
  • That is basicly why they went to hydraulic lifters in 1956.

Wasn't there an old post that mentioned the 55 Hash engine needed to be removed to adjust the valves?

'55's had solid lifters, '56 went to hydraulic. All 202 motors had solid.
