i converted the 30 Hudson front axle i had to hornet front drum brakes. it was pretty much free if you can do it yourself. if i would have had working mechanical brakes i would have just kept those. i have heard when they are set up right they work very well. i sure don't care for the look of disc brakes on these axles, but to each his own. if i didn't have a ton of man hours in mine i would trade you for those mechanical ones! i have some pictures on a thread here.0

Keep the original brakes. When set up, they work great. It will take you about 6 to 8 hours to set them up for the first time. Then you just need to learn how to apply them. There is a learning curve for using steel drums vrs. cast drums.0

I learned they are not great after 40 mph. Once they get hot they don't stop well.
My 29 would go 75 mph or more , but you needed to plan your stopping ahead.
It may be they weren't set up right, I don't recall taking 6-8 hours. I had new linings installed on the old shoes, and they may not have been correct for steel drums.
They were good in town , but not so good on open road when dealing with cars that
had disc breaks and stopped quickly in front of you.
It depends on what you use the car for , you may consider hydraulic if you are going to tour with it.0 -
Thanks guys. Just wanted to see what the options were for this axle. Thanks0
