I have been think about using an electric cooling fan for my 308 in a step-down. I would like get some feedback on what electric fans (pushers or pullers) others have use. I would also like to get information on the modifications that were needed and the model/part number of the fan.

I used one the standard brands you find in Summit Speed equip., Ebay etc, 16 " with at least 2500 cfm. You will need 12 volts and an installation kit (relay, thermostat). Install a manual override switch at the dash and fuse the line. Use as a puller for best performance, remove the mechanical fan from the water pump for more clearance and to avoid flow interference.

    FYI
I have a couple Hudson's with Electric Fans from White High Performance in Kingsport Tn. 423 722 5152They have lot different sizes and all are high Flow and less expensive than Summit and Others. Recommend Fan behind Radiator but I think '54's need to be in front(?)
I recommend a Thermostat Probe Kit to insert into a hose outlet or radiator fins rather than an Off/On Switch. Kit has an adjustable Knob to set on/of temp's. Additionally, always install a Relay in the Hot Line because when Fan kicks On initially it will draw a lot of Amps. I like to hook a dash light so know when Fan runs, (You may be suprised how often it doesnt run).
If remove Belt Fan Buy a large Electric Fan

The engine driven fan only performs a useful function when you are stuck in traffic, at highway speeds it just adds to the noise levels and absorbs 2 or 3HP. At speeds of just 10mph the airflow through the radiator is way more than that provided by the engine fan.

I have an electric fan on a thermosyphon 48 Morris 8E and the only time the fan ever comes on is during the Spring Festival parade, 30 minutes or so at walking speed

That said, the most anaemic electric fan will produce as much air as a Hudson engine fan at idle. Put a good electric fan on but don't stress too much about squeezing the last CFM out of it.

I had a radiator shop solder a threaded fitting into the bottom tank so I could screw in a temperature switch (89°C?) and that switch controls the fan via a relay.
  • My '54 Hornet had a small supplemental "pusher" fan on it when I got it, that made all the difference when driving at low-speed in 90F+ weather. Used it for years. Now have a full-sized "puller" fan that draws about 20 amps @ 12V, and works great. Summit seems to have the best prices.

I have a 6 volt pusher fan that is in excellent condition. I had it on my 54 Hornet when I had the 3 core radiator. Now have 4 core and it won't fit. I used it only at stoplights in 100 degree weather.
Worked great. Had a switch on the instrument panel, switched on and off, and also had a relay. Used it for one year. Have the instructions. All wiring included. You will have to order the straps to mount it to the radiator. I have the original invoice to where you can get the straps.
