Power steering question

I have a 53 Hornet 4-door I drive with hand controls.
I recently installed a complete power steering setup from a 54.
It works great at slow speed when rolling.
The wheel is almost not turnable when the car is idling and not in motion.
The manual says the PS should engage at 8 lbs of pressure even if the car is stationary.
I exert a lot more force than that and the PS does not engage. Idle is set a bit higher to compensate-but no help.
Anyone with this setup in a 54 or earlier car have any comments or suggestions?

Thanks

DO YOU HAVE RADIAL TIRES ON THE CAR ? IF SO YOU WILL HAVE HIGHER THAN 8 PSI BECAUSE OF THE LARGER FOOT PRINT OF THE TIRES IT'S JUST A THOUGHT

sounds like your pump and/or cylinder is bad. with the car in motion, there is little difference with ps. one other thing to look at, is there a valve unit on the back of your pump? since ps was new and scary, some were equiped so the salesman could demo what happens if you lose power steering, since hudson didn't change the gearing, the car would drive the same as a non ps car.

Where would I be able to have the steering cylinder rebuilt. The piston rod is very scored. When the 54 Hornet that I own is sitting in the garage with the engine idling I can turn the steering wheel with my little finger and it has radials. Sitting the oil prips out . Ray
