1940 trans.
I am looking for a transmission with overdrive for my stock 40 Hudson traveler. The one I have does not have overdrive. My question is do they use a 9 or a 10inch clutch in the 40 and the 41 models with overdrive. I would like to know before I look to hard. Also do I have to have my driveshaft cut down? Thanks for the help. You all are a wealth of knowledge

Thanks, the real reason I want one is to drive on the freeway and not get ran over0

Some club members have installed 3spd O/D's from '46-'47's into the '37-'39's which have the X frame like your car. You would have to pull the engine/trans to make the swap. Perhaps one of these folks would chime in and explain exactly what is required to accomplish this.

Yes, I agree with Kevin. You stand a much better chance of finding the '41 and later overdrives and I think they will fit within the space. (And, cost you much less money!) An added benefit is that the later OD is mated to a transmission that is synchronized. The '40 is not.
And, yes, you will probably have to have your drive shaft cut down (which is no big deal) unless by chance you find one that fits. (This would occur if the overdrive-equipped 1940 driveshafts were the same length as those of any of the 1941-and-later overdrive-equipped Hudsons. And assuming, of course, that you could then find one!)
However, you need to find someone who's stuffed a later model overdrive into his 1940 Hudson, for specific advice!0
