My ignition switch/key appears to be Hudson, but my key head "keychain hole" is broken off.

Anyone have some blanks that would work?

  • What Ken says is true but B&S key blanks are getting hard to find. B&S left the automotive key and lock business some years ago. The new company is a spinoff called Strattec(sp ?) . Anyway a local locksmith would be able to find key blanks using the numbers H1098X B24 and 1098X from Ilco. One is the round head and the other is the octagonal head. Heck, ebay might even have those.

My local locksmith had a stash of AMC blanks, worked like a charm for my 47 truck. Charged $10 to meet me at my work and cut a pair of keys :)

I also have AMC keys (for my '37). That is what the local hardware store offered me back in the mid 1970's, when I went in to have copies made. In fact the keys have the old "AM" script logo on them.

Here is a company that deals in antique car key blanks. No Hudson keys, but interestingly, they offer a Russwin key for an Essex! http://exwisehe.com/index.html

I had keys made up at my local Ace hardware store, had the blanks in stock. Not sure if Home Depot or Lowes has them.

Just don't tell the locksmith you want them for a Hudson - unless he's been around the block a few times!!!!!!!

I noticed several years ago when I had my 46 Hudson that the key heads were reversed from GM cars using the same blank. Hex head was for trunk and glove box and oval head for ignition and door. Used to have a ton of those blanks, but since retirement have got rid of them.

They are just B1 blanks. They should be available at any locksmith for a few bucks each, but they will not have the original Briggs and Stratton keys like the ones on Ebay. $12 is actually a fair price for NOS key blanks. I have some of those, but couldn't get the local key guy to cut them for me, because he couldn't replace them with originals if he screwed them up.

Next week I am going up to Dr. Doug's to pick up engine and tranny. While there, I plan on keying all of the locks for the convertible. I'll try and get some pics and let everyone know of their capabilities while there. This is fairly new equipment and supplies to WR and they have yet to maximize the potential (no time, but on the back burner). All of this "new" equipment came from a former Hudson dealer. I'm actually going to try and get all of the equipment sorted out so that the operation is more of a viable entity.

I'm not a locksmith, so those of you that are, please forgive my ignorance. Supposedly, you can "key" in a Hudson key code and the machine will cut a key for you. Duplicates are a no-brainer.

I thought that I would bring this back to the top as I found the following information that should be available to all who need keys for their Hudson.

Keys- easy way to have correct matching keys made for Hudson..remove glove box lock and locate number on cylinder it will match trunk lock, remove ignition and number from cylinder will also fit doors. Take numbers to locksmith and have Briggs & Stratton keys made. Thanks to..... Wayne Wherle, Western Reserve Chapter

Old farmer- the only thing to note about this method is you may have a mixed lock set. In the case of my 47 truck I did just that, and discovered that of the door and ingnition were a set but glovebox was different.
