so yesterday while trying to start my 49 Hudson commodore the starter would spin however not engage. I took the starter off and noticed it would not move freeley so I paked it full of motor oil with a spray bottle and freed it up. packed it with grease and put back on and worked like a charm. One more note take only the two nuts pointing toward the engine bay not the rear ones. I hope this is helpful to someone my car is a 49 hudson commodore6 all original positive ground flathead 262 engine.

srry the part I oiled and greased up is the part where the shaft that spins is all the way to the spring and twisted it back and forth while applying the oil and then grease. just got my new 15 inch sivertown ww radials. only need a few trim pieces and interior to complete this project.

The 1950 "Hudson Owner Manual" suggests the following for the starter: " The Bendix drive pinion threads should be cleaned occasionally with a brush dipped in kerosene to remove gum and dirt. Do not oil the threads as the kerosene will provide all the lubrication required."

Perhaps WD-40, as suggested by Ken U-Tex, would make a good substitute for kerosene regarding this starter issue.

Thanks Kim!!! It has been a year long project in the final stages now I can't wait to cruise it around the vegas streets.
