$300 for a running '50 Hud 8 with overdrive delivered free.
"I wonder if he'll take $200." LOL-1 -
would this be a straight swap for a 1951 commodore 8? I know the 262 changes configuration while keeping the same displacement.

pse - yes, '50 & '51 8s the same but it has 254 cubes so displacement slightly less0
-
thanks. my 262 runs sweet but my car was originally an 8. I understand that the 8 is more primitive and has less performance. true?0

DON'T GET ALL EXCITED ABOUT THIS GUYS I BOUGHT IT ABOUT AN HOUR AGO SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD DEAL TO ME0
-
right. i'm more into into the general topic about the 8 versus the 262. Is there a big fall-off in performance with the 8 and is it less reliable/durable than the 262?

The 262 was rated at 121 HP while the 8 was rated at 128 HP, 10 more with aluminum head due to higher compression. The 8 is also a smoother running engine than the 6. So no downside on this swap. Would also fit in '46 - '47 pickup with moving the radiator forward a bit.0

What about the steering box hitting the widebock?0

I thought it was from The Boxer?
(But what do I know? I am just a poor boy
though my story's seldom told...)0 -
I have a stepdown 8 slated for my 46 PU. On a trial fit, I had interference. I got t'lookin at it with the engine out, and the steering box can be moved vertically an inch by re-drilling the frame, which will get rid of most if not all of the interference.
The OD governor misses the X frame in the truck by 1/2 inch by the way. Don't know about the car.
I then remembered, that there were instructions for my 36 Terraplane, (and probably others from the same era,) for moving the box up and down on slots for the purpose of adjusting the steering wheel.
I have some pics posted earlier on a 39 eight swap into my 47 pickup, showing the radiator brackets needed to move it on the cross member. Should have a 3 inch core also if you're going with the eight. I'm having my radiator re-cored as it's plugged up and only a 2 inch anyway.0 -
Uncle J - If, by any chance, you have a copy of those instructions I'd love to put a copy in the online library.

Gotcha Ken. Good point as I would have forgotten to do it. Could I turn the steering wheel a couple of splines instead?0
-
Paul, I don't know what you had to pay for it, but I'm sure it was way less than I spent on a complete rebuild of my 49 8. which was way in excess of $5K for machine shop and parts. And I did all the disassembly and reassembly! It's a sweet engine when it's right and can be a nightmare when it isn't !0
