Wildrick Restoration carries them and has them in stock. Might have to send your core.

Many brands of cars used double-action pumps with the vacuum side addition to aid vacuum wiper motors. My '57 Ford Ranchero w/ a 292 Y-block V8 has one too and it basically looks very similar to the Hudson. With ANY fuel pump it has to be the exact application for your motor. There almost always is a manufacturer's part number stamped on the side of the mounting flange that bolts to the engine. But 60 years on, you may have a wrong pump. Look up the correct number in a book. Rebuild it yourself with a kit from http://www.maritimedragracing.com/antique_auto_parts_cellar.htm. This is one of the easiest tasks in this hobby.

I can highly recommend Then & Now in Weymouth, Mass., if you wish to rebuild your present pump. Been using them for years. They come back in show condition, and with the old parts, for only a bit more then a rebuild kit.

If you have an older one like I did, the alcohol in today's gas can do a number on them. Whatever you do do not just get an NOS one off the self, make sure it has been rebuilt with modern polymers that can tolerate the alcohol. I know all too well from experience on my C8.

Yes I was thinking of rebuilding it myself due to the NOS not having the proper internals. I am going to see if I can find one already remanufactured on ebay if not I will try your suggestions I have been told to look for the numbers stamped on pump just need to take mine off to see what numbers are visable where the pump connects to the block.

Couldn't figure out why my carb was flooding after a 3 month carb overhaul. WGD. Had to have a pliers on the part that goes upand down and squirts the amount of fuel in the carb, to get the top half of the carb off to determine what was going on. That arm that goes up and down connected to the accel arm was fused to the inside of the carb. Reason, as 50CDan has stated Alcohol in todays gas. I use Premium gas, and drive the car 2X's a week. Use nothing but Shell Premium. After searching what I can do about the alcohol, this is what I came up with. #1 don't let the car set for any length of time. #2Use Sta-Bil and STP Fuel & Carb treatment, which are supposed to counter alcohol in the fuel. Don't know if this will help fuel pumps, but it has helped me keeping the parts in the carb operating. If anybody else has better ideas lay em on us....

When u run a single action pump u lose the functionality of the wipers right?? Or is there a way to keep them operational??
  • No you wont loose wipers they just dont work as good. Hook vacuum line from manifold direct to wiper motor. You can add a small vacuum tank to help store some vacuum power.

Would a fuel pressure regulator be a good idea to reduce the flooding of the carb?? Not sure what psi my mechanical pump is running I doubt its over 7psi my carb also floods from time to time kinda annoying.

Sounds like you either have the wrong pump, or you have float problems in the carb, Comm6. You shouldn't need a pressure regulator.

C6, if the float is set correctly in your carburetor and you are experiencing flooding, the suggestion made by Hudson Grandpa is the most likely reason. Adding corn alcohol to our motor car fuel has created more headaches than good for vintage vehicles. The metallic materials used to manufacture your Hudson carburetor reacts in a negative way when exposed to corn alcohol and water it attracts. The interior surfaces of the carburetor as well as the moving parts become corroded and covered with the products of these negative reactions. With these coatings the valves which should create closed orifices are no longer able to seal or are stuck shut. Each carburetor will have its own individual result, but in all cases the result will be incorrect operation and poor performance. When you replace the fuel pump taking the time to open up and correct any problems found in the carburetor will assure you a better overall driving experience.

I hope I have the right pump as I have already made the puchase what got me is the number stamped on my pump matched this one pictured and looks identical even the lever however it shows as a Oldsmobile, Pontiac and other 1949 and 1950  6 cylGM cars. well its on the way to my house if anything at least it will not spew gasoline out the port holes. hope it works will keep u guys posted thanks.

Comm 6, The fuel pump for the dual diaphragm 1950 ( for '48 to early '53) is AC 1539108. It will interchange with the 53-54 AC 5594057. The Hollander Interchange does not show that these interchange with any other make car. Pontiac uses a similar but there must be a difference. AC AJ models were used on many cars. I would guess it's in the arm, or its movement. 7 psi is high and if you still have the original brass floats in the carb, I believe there lies your flooding issue. Also the pressure can be regulated a bit by adding or removing gaskets in the pack.

ALL THIS TALK ABOUT MODERN FUELS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOREVER...I LIVE IN SEATTLE AND ALL OUR GAS HAS ETHANOL ADDED....BEEN USING THIS BLEND EVER SINCE I GOT MY CAR SOME 10 YEARS AGO AND HAVE NEVER ENCOUNTERED ANY OF THE PROBLEMS DESCRIBED.

THE CAR SITS IN THE GARAGE DURING THE WINTER AND I START IT AND LET IT RUN 2-3 TIMES A WEEK, I DON'T ADD ANY FUEL STABALIZERS AND RUN JUST THE ORIGINAL SINGLE ACTION PUMP...NO ELECTRONIC PUMP AND AS FAR AS THE WIPERS THEY RUN JUST THE SAME EITHER SINGLE ACTION OR DOUBLE ACTION

MAYBE I'M JUST LUCKY..I ONCE TRIED THE AMC PUMP AND IT WAS A REAL PAIN IN THE TUSH

paulargetype what comes in the carb rebuild kit? I am now im having starting issuses still has old gas pump I did notice that on the passanger side there is a little spring which controls the intake that is completley unhooked its just dangling and has no control whatsoever of the throttle opening or closing also another plunger that goes up and down is not moved unless done manually any input greatley appreciated
  • comm6, make sure you change your oil for if gas was coming out the side it also was going inside. That spring controls the fast idle step. That carb that you have in the picture, belongs on all 1937 hudsons. 6 or 8, also all 1938, 6 0r 8's, also all 1939's. 6 or 8's. They all list by a different Carter model number, but all take the same repair kit. That plunger next to your finger is what makes the throttle come back slow so engine will not stall. What year is your car? Spring # is 61-123, Carter #. Walt

Tom-WA: Yes this fuel issue will go on and on, and probably will never be solved. Probably the only way to solve it or find out more what to do about it, is to buttonhole all the chemists from the major 3 oil companies. And I bet you won't get a straight answer. Running the car 2-3X's a week keeps you from letting the gas sit too long. Some of us have a sitting longer problem. Thank goodness I don't being in Texas, but what about the guys in Minnesota, etc. One guy says keep the tank full, so moisture cannot accumulate in the fuel. Who knows..You have no idea, as to the amount of Ethanol added to the fuel in your area. Could be different in all parts of the country. Here in Texas you will see acres & acres of Cornfields, and acres & acres of Maize. Then you go to Houston and you have acres and acres of refinerys, to add all the corn cobs. If Sta Bil was mean't to keep the gas fresh in your weedeater or mower, and it does, then it should work in your car. One other thing. When I had my engine overhauled 2 years ago, my mechanic said these engines were designed to run on leaded fuel. I add a bottle of lead additive to a tank each time. Call me Anal if you want, but no problems so far. I did have a minor problem a month ago, but I attribute it to a bad batch of gas, and letting the car sit too long in rainy weather.

Mr. Walt I was very very lucky in finding a rebuilt carb for 50 bucks what a deal!!! Does this look more like the carb that should be in my 1949 commodore?? I just want to keep my car as close to original as possible I might add my car does not leak one drop of oil very happy about that. The only thing that leaks is as I stated the fuel pump from the two breathers I will change my oil as soon as I get my new pump in see what happens thanks for all the help I love this site!!!
