Posts: 44Greasemonkey I just got started rebuilding my 1940 , 175 ci engine and have a problem. I ordered a engine rebuild kit from dale cooper. The Exhust valves have a thicker head on them ,then the ones I removed. When I set them in the block ,they stick up about an eighth of an inch. The ones I removed from my engine ,Exhust and intake, were thin and look identical. Do I have the right valves,or has the engine been worked on in the past. How will I solve this problem. I appreciate any ideas on what to do next

Did you contact Dale Cooper? I'm sure he can answer your question.

Your old valves were worn out.
  • This is a pic of how the valves set in the block. The front and thickest is the Exhust valve. Both set up above the block. My concern is that they will hit the head when the engine is running. I thought that they should set flush with the block. Am I wrong?

I don't see any problem from your photo, If the head diameter is the same let the machine shop cut the seats. The old valves were likely too thin from previous valve jobs or wear. The new valves will run cooler and may boost compression a bit from the thickness.

That is the correct position for the valves.

Ditto Geoff's post both times. The O.E.valves were probably worn out and will just burn quickly if cut and reused. Intake and exhaust valves have the same head diameter for the splasher 6 engines but they have a different fillet between the head and stem. The exh.is the thicker one and intake is shallower,so to speak. You need to make sure you pull the lifters and inspect them for wear, including the tappet screws. All this makes a much better job as well as a much quiter running valve train.
  • Thanks for all the comments. They have helped a lot. I am sure there will be more questions later. My goal is to have the car rebuilt and completely finished so I can drive it to the 2015 intl. meet in Colorado springs
