308 crankshaft differences

Some where in the back of my noggin, it seems like the crankshaft to flywheel bolt flange is different on a standard vs automatic-- I am rebuilding a 51 308 that had an automatic and will be putting a standard shift in. Is the flange the same regardless of transmission type used?

Yes Kerry, both are the same. Auto has a bushing in the end of the crankshaft. Both have to be sealed to the flywheel and torqued properly.

A guy called me yesterday looking for info. He has an 8 cylinder engine from a manual car that he is installing into an Auto car. The engine was 49 I think going into a 52. Can the flange on the crank be modified on the engine? He has the engine and trans out of the car. Let me know if there is anything helpful that I can pass on.

No, the crank needs to have the pilot bearing for the Hydro, otherwise still the same.

Thats what he was asking, could this be modified "in engine"? I've never looked at this, but it sounds like a bad idea. It seems like I read about this before, but did't find it in the search. I think if I tried that I may not tell too many people :).

    Thanks guys

Yes.. Yes he survived! I told the story here on the forum. He is a present member of OBC. He did the stunt many years ago trying to install a HydraMatic in his Mom's 50. When they lived in NY State. No I won't embarrass him by giving his name.
Although he does have a sense of humor..
  • It's possible to bore the crank pilot bearing hole in situ but any hand-held attempt will result in disaster. The level of precision required to provide the necessary interference fit for the bushing would have made his idea very bad to begin with.
Recall "possible".....not "practical". I'll do it for One million $. Maybe twice, and I'll buy lunch.

I would say if you could find the "needle in a hay stack"
  • Even that's possible.....just not likely.
