Several weeks back a poster on this forum asked for a source of Hudson Accessory wire wheel hubcaps. Two of these hubcaps are currently being auctioned on eBay.

If you want a set, you should buy them, as they are getting harder to find. Not necessarily you, OldFarmer, but anyone who is looking for some.

As RL says, these are multi-make wires with a Hudson center cap. Finding a set of two with the center cap is unusual.

The "face" part of these with all the stainless steel, is common between all makes who offered them, including Hudson, Studebaker, Kaiser, Nash, but the inner black stamped steel "bucket" is specific to different wheel bolt patterns and wheel widths. You can't install them without the right buckets. And of course the center cap is brand-specific. I have them on a Studebaker and one of them 'creaks'... a lot.

I have four with the Nash name on them. However they are 14 inch and not in great shape. But I would sell them cheap. Arnie in Nevada.

I put a bid in on them... It will be fun to see where they go.
  • I have a set of these on my '53 Super Wasp. Wonder if I should bid for a couple of spares?

That would not be the best way to make my day? But, all is fair in old car parts.

OK, I can take a hint. I won't place a bid on 'em. Hope you're the top bidder!

Thought I would mention that the person that wanted these wheel covers paid a big price for them. I will have to say that they wanted them a lot more than I did--but I gave it the old college try and bid high and often and lost. I think that made me the winner?
  • Those fake wire caps fall in the same waste bin as the proverbial snot wipe dispensers. In my opinion, you were lucky you didn't get them. Get yourself a set of original '54 6d dog dish caps with a set of trim rings. That's what your car came with and they are really very sharp looking centers. You can use the same on the rear, or use any of the stainless caps with trim rings on the rears since they don't show anyhow

    Point well taken Arkie.

Yes Brownie, here is a pic of my '54 7D with the 6D caps. I really like these better than the full wheel disc which seems to have an affinity for removing itself from it's duties.

Personally, I thought the hub caps would have sold for a higher amount.....at least that's what I had hoped since my '53 Super Wasp has these "fake (Hudson) wire caps". And, I might add, it also has the "proverbial snot wipe dispenser".

In fact, the car has a lot of other Hudson accessories which include a 1954 radio, dealer fender mounted antenna, rear radio speaker, backup lights (since removed), windshield washer, oil filter (since removed), Twin-H with later paper filters along with the appropriate Twin-H badge on the trunk lid.

According to Larry Kennedy, a one time owner (or at least possessor) of my Super Wasp, the car was still sitting unsold on the Edward Mutto Hudson dealer lot in Belleville, IL late in 1953. In order to help sell the car, it was apparently "duded up" with a whole bunch of accessories with include ones exclusive to 1954 such as the radio, fender antenna and "fake wire hub caps".

Well, the 1954 radio actually came into being with the announcement of the 1953 senior cars, so that part of it would not be unusual. However, the fact that your car has the fender mounted antenna would indicate dealer installation. As to the other accessories, Edward Mutto Hudson was most likely cleaning out the accessory shelves in his parts room, as it was not uncommon to open the trunk lid on new cars and find a "Care Package" of many, many, Hudson Approved Accessories for which an invoice would follow from the Parts/Service Dept.

The '54 radio on my '53 Super Wasp doesn't seem to quite fit into the dash holes as the tuning nobs are a little off center. Nonetheless, thanks, Jerry, for the information regarding Hudson dealers cleaning out dealer shelves of excess accessories and "care packages". "Mcollins", nice Mutto dealer badge! Here's a photo of my dealer badge.
