I thought I'd put this info here in case anyone is interested in starter rebuilding.
This was an e-mail I received back from Glen at http://acewichita.com
Sorry for the delay getting back to you a lot on my plate lately.
On this type starter its matter of making it solid and detuning it so its not
over powered.
You didn't say whether is was a 6 or 8 auto or std but any is doable.

Below is my mission statement.
I send pics of the jobs in
progress so folks can see what they are paying me for. sample pics below
Everything I rework is built to outlast me, the owner and their grand kids!!
You see I am a one man band with 50+ years in this profession. All the
pics on my website an all work is done by me alone.
Something you may have missed on my website is the starter tester at this

The shiny bits are either new or have been replated. I use no silver/aluminum paint
on my reworked starters and generators.
The black screw heads and nuts have been blackened with Birchwood-Casey blackening
gel not painted.
The brass looking bits are in fact brass.
The armature below isn't yours its just an example of the process.
Over the years when these starters are put in stressful non start situations the lead in the

comm risers gets hot and flows then resets when it cools. This lessens the conductivity of the

connections between the windings and comm bars. By re-leading this the bond is made

strong again so it can perform as intended. I then heat the armature and re insulate it

with a heat setting varnish. When cooled its at least as solid as it was when new.
The pic's above are the armature re-lead process. The riser is cleaned each segment is hand
soldered it then tested for shorts and magnetism. Then heated and re-varnished with heat
setting hard varnish to hold everything in place.
