G'day All,

Wondering how strong the 4 stud 16 inch wire wheels are, 1934.

If stripped and rebuilt, are they capable of taking a real pounding ?

Does anyone have experience of the wheels and / or studs breaking ?

Thanks

I''ve never heard of these wheels failing. The spokes are real short, therefore not subject tongue same stresses as bigger wheels. If you are worried about their strength, the you could always replace them with '35 steel wheels.

Related based on the 4-mounting bolt concern: I had a '35 Terraplane coupe with the 4-bolt artillery style stock wheels of that year. The car had at some point in its life been likely run into a ditch and put up onto its side as minor side-of-roof damage revealed.
After a couple of years of owning the car I was getting a creaking sound somewhere and removing the hub caps revealed that both the right side wheels, apparently still in their same positions as back in the day of the accident, were cracking radially through the bolt holes. I found two others, magnafluxed them, they were fine, painted them. Now that was an extreme stressor incident but I have heard others have found the same thing on 4-bolt Hudson and Terraplane wheels, both wire and artillery. I have never heard of any problem related to the spokes.

I wonder what the thinking was behind the reduction of wheel lugs? 30 Essex-6 lug, 31-5 lug then down to 4. Talking about the wire wheels. Cost savings?
