Steering Wheel question

Hello all... New to the forum, but have a question before I buy it. I have a 49 491Super 6 Sedan. My question is this and might be silly but... I would like to swap out my '49's steering wheel with a '50. Will it be a quick easy swap or will I need to find someone to make an adapter of some sorts?

Since you are new here . . . I don't really think the forum is for sale.

Oh, and post pics of your car if you get a chance. We all love pictures.
  • hahaha I meant the '50 steering wheel and I sure can do that when I get some taken... It's at the starting stage, but is in great shape to restore.

If you're lucky the wheel will pop right off with a yank. However, sometimes these wheels can really be stuck. After you get the horn button off by pressing down with your palm and rotating to the left, (unhook the battery, lol) loosen the nut but leave it on the shaft a few threads so the wheel doesn't go flyin and hurt ya when it comes loose. If you want to preserve the original wheel, you'll need to find or make a split adapter to fit around the column and go up inside the wheel so you don't break the plastic. Then you may need to find or make a puller to straddle the column and pull on your adapter. I made one out of a couple of C-clamps.

The new wheel will fit over the splines. You will want to make sure it lines up with the front wheels straight ahead. Good luck.
  • If you want a car with a 1950 steering wheel, why not just buy a 1950 model car?

Arkie, I have the "curse of the sharp tongue", but vowed many years ago to keep it in check on this forum.

But it sure is hard, sometimes. . .
  • Hello 49 HudsonSix, welcome to the forum. You say the 50 wheel is "good to restore", well , there should be lots of ones out there in nice shape, that dont need restoring. should be less expensive.
