29 Essex "Series"

There were two "series" of 1929 Essex: First and Second. Butler's "History of Hudson" states no visible differences between the series. Were there any mechanical or engineering differences between series? Why did Hudson bother to differentiate by starting "Second Series" at VIN 10800300 . Anyone know?

Good question! I know of no physical differences. unlike 1927, where the mid year change brought about some marked changes.

Surely there are some '29 Essex owners amongst those assembled here who know the answer to this?0

I have both an original late and early serial number Essex and could find no difference between them. I have only seen 2 references to the different series. ! was Butlers book and the other was the second printing of the manual refers to different beginning serial numbers. I spent time going through the manuals and didn't find any differences. I also checked the service bulletins, and other than colors, could not find any real differences there either. I'm not saying there isn't any difference. just saying the literature didn't clearly delineate any.0

That's the kind of definitive answer I was hoping for. THANK YOU. As an owner of each and in your position, you KNOW.

According to my research 1st series 1929 Essex, intro'd 2 Jan 29 serial numbers ran 928658 to 1070299. 2nd series, intro'd 30 June 1930, serial numbers ran 1070300 to 1165673.
The series system can be confusing at times since the 1st series (of any year that used this system) was a continuation of the previous years 2nd series. So, that said, one would wonder what happens when you have a major turnover such as going from 1929 to 1930. Well, since the 1930 first series was intro'd on 1 Jan. 1930 that wasn't a problem.
While there are no notable differences between 1st and 2nd series 1929 models the mid-year models usually did have some changes incorporated - any changes made in this case are probably so minor as to be not obvious.
Volkswagen did pretty much the same thing with their beetles, making line changes as the cars came off the production line.
