The old days

I have had to set a limit on how far I will go to a National. Two days travel is about my limit. If it is beyond that the cost becomes too much to justify spending the cash. Between gas, hotel and food it is impossible to do a National for less than 1,000 bucks.0

Brownie, I think a lot of people feel the same way - high gas prices and distance are becoming a big factor on going to a National. Hotel prices are also going to become an issue. French Lick is a good example - $140 a night is really beyond my income, being honest about it. I'm planning on arriving Wed afternoon and will leave either Sat right after the business meet or Sunday morning. I've got to put a request on this forum - only way I'm going to be able to afford French Lick is if I find a room-share. French Lick may be a "destination" - but so is Mars and I ain't planning on a trip there any time soon.

@Alex: I'm ready for this one and will give you the tip:
We should do like this avaricious man who went to a brothel with two other guys. The way to pay was about ''length''. The first one paid ten dollars, the second one paid eight, and the
avaricious man paid $1.50 The two first were laughing at him and teasing him. The first one told him: '' So, you was kind of...''short''? The avaricious man replied with a smile: ''No! I paid after! Michel0 -
Very good.

The tax talk brought up something that a friend had told a couple years ago. He had gone to visit a cousin in Germany (my friend's mother was from Germany) and found that his cousin paid 52% of his income for taxes, apparently with no refunds. Ouch!

Now, to get back to the old days, Anybody remember having to put chains on? I have a couple of versions here, and of course, full chains on the old Wheel Horse.
I've had this bunch of PRESTO tire chains out in the shed for a while. Don't remember where I got them but the clips were in an old box and the chains in a 30 cal ammo box. Never got them out to look at until today. The instructions show 2 being used, which was about par for this type. I have 18 sets. I can't imagine a snow storm bad enough to put all of them on. Must have been NOS. Gonna sell some by the pair I guess, I don't need them all. Also, I had this other one where the strap went through the rim. Enjoy.0 -
UJ, our son got to buy a set of chains last week. He and family went to Breckenridge Colorado for a winter vacation. Not being from the area the attitude got to his family and they needed to come home, but to do so he had to purchase a set of chains to get out. Colorado and winter vacations are now not a combination they will be considering.0

When I got my 36 there was a set of chains in the back. I fitted them to the 600X16 wheels and they are a fit. Have no Idea what I will ever do with them, but I have them....0

I got a set of chains with my Terraplane Eight from Norway. My whitewall tyres even have chain marks on them - took a few years to figure out that the marks were from chains.........!0

Even in sunny Southern Calif. chains are required in the mountains when snowing. There was a pair of chains in the bed of the 47 Hudson PU I acquired last year. $10 dollars if interested. I'll never use them. Last time I put on snow chains was 1959.

Best chain story I can come up with an elderly gentleman drove his Olds Toranado, front wheel drive, into a local gas station where I lived in Maine and wanted chains on his wheels. So Sonny started to jack the car up in front. The old gentleman went ballistic - wanted to know what was Sonny thinking - putting the chains on the front wheels!!!!! Sonny just shrugged and put them on the back wheels.
