Just got this starter back from the rebuilder. Bendix looks a lot different to me than the one that was on it.
Any of you seen this one? 51 Hornet engine

  • Kerry, Thats not the right starter bendix for your standard starter. The teeth on the barrel gear are too long and will not disengage from the flywheel . BIG headache there. That bendix may work well on a Ford tractor but not well on a Hudson. Your old bendix can have the barrel gear switched out with the proper replacement currently available. Keep that one in the picture off the car.

Here is a pic of the proper one. Note the shorter pinion gear.
There is a newer version that looks like yours (without the spring). I have one on my 49. Don't recall where it came from or part number.I'm sure someone will chime in. I had some problems keeping the pin in the end to keep the whole thing from spinning.

That's what I was afraid of, and the reason I posted the picture. I'll try to find an nors one.
    Thanks guys!

I had one of those on my Hudson Commodore. It chewed up two flywheels and then quit working. I improvised and put a high speed Chevy starter that engages from the front and it works great.

    Jason,
On a standard shift? That is interesting. The Hudson std. shift flywheel teeth are cut with a taper to mesh with the starter gear from the rear. Did you do any mods to the flywheel? More details please.

I tapered the ring gear to an old flywheel from the front and put some small welds on the ring gear to keep it from being knocked off on a mishit. I took a template that I think Ol Racer sent me for an automatic transmission and made a modified template to attach to the bell housing that had a large hole where the original starter used to sit. I took an adapter plate that I had bought from Bendsten for my Kaiser (automatic) and took it to a machine shop. They sawed the part holding the high speed starter off in a circle slightly smaller than the hole in my new template. I used an old bell housing to line it up and spot welded the high speed starter attached to the circular piece to my modified adapter plate until I got it close. Once it lined up properly, my welding guy built it up to where it's not going anywhere.

Here are the two starter drives. The bottom one is the correct one. The top one is the one they installed.
