What has shown up as hot rod material on the HAMB Forum in the past day or two. These include a very restorable
1934 Hudson Sedan & 1936 Hudson Coupe in California, as well as a 1929 Essex Super Six rumble seat coupe which appears to be in decent condition in Rochester, NY.

Engine swappers probably aren't too concerned there. Always a lot of water to be wrung out of asked prices on that forum. That coupe is sweet!

the '34, with dual sidemounts, radio, looks like very straight body is eminently restorable. Both are 8s and the '36 is quite rare, even has original rear tire cover.
pic of what the '36 H8 cp. could look like

think the owner's name is Roy Larsen from whom I bought a '34 T KU conv. about 40 years ago, if so, he's got to be pushing 90 (& don't mean mile per hour, LOL)

I'd suggest WTN (but of course only comes out every other month), Hemmings, and are you aware of Old Cars Weekly, a newspaper format out of Wisc. that, like the name says, is a weekly; I used to get pretty good response from it.

They all look like great cars. The good news is that none of these are likely to get scrapped or rat rodded at the asking prices. Hope they get restored ...

Paul - it has interesting articles & does a good job of keep track of auction sales, prints out major auctions sold sheets, all cars, conditions, prices. Modest in price & arrives timely.

I remember when OCW began publication back in the 70's. The first issue contained some spoof ads to fill the pages - one of which was about a 1930's Terrorplane (no typo - Terrorplane). We were just getting the New England Chapter organized and into business (this was 1971 or so). I remember I was, with Uncle Mike, doing the newsletter we had going then. I wrote to OCW asking permission to reprint the Terrorplane ad - which was granted. I also wrote an article or two for OCW - one of which appeared later in the big "The Best of OCW" publication they put out. I remember I was astounded when they sent me a check for the article.

Haha Paul! I was thinking the same thing. Especially after reading the wording in the sale ad. Something like "plates professionally welded in the floor". That's some one who is not familiar with cars, to say it that way. They are trying to sell two original stock cars on a hot rod forum. Notice the person who did the ad has only those two posts there. A nooby. I think this is some one cleaning out an estate.

Hello All, I live very close to 29 Essex. Just wanted opinions on the $8500.00 asking price. I know that condition is everything, but if it's a operable daily driver is the price in the house?

Keep in mind that HAMB prices are generally watery. If you look at the cars in the classified section, many were first advertised months ago and have been periodically reposted at lower prices.

Hello Everyone Please let me introduce myself, Tom King, Auburn NY. I’m the lucky dog who bought the 29 Essex. I will characterize my knowledge and experience with Hudson / Essex automobiles as “still wet behind the ears”. To Explain: My 35 Terraplane has been in my wife’s family since her great uncle Alfred bought it new. It passed through a few family members eventually ending up with my father-in-law, Ed, in 1970. Ed drove it for a few years then stored it in his barn until spring of 1998 when he got it running again and starting driving it a few times a year in parades. Upon his passing in 2006 I bought the Terraplane from my mother-in law. In 2006 it had 27,800 miles on it, currently about 30,200. At the time I honestly didn’t know the connection to Hudson as Ed had always just called it The Terraplane. I’d never talked to him to much about it as I though my wife’s brother would end up with it. Apparently her brother had no interest in it. Ed had a Mechanical Procedure Manual for it and in the pages was an application for the HET Club. I joined HET shortly thereafter, although Iife’s ebb and flow haven’t allowed me to be active. I did a lot of internet searching and reading and discovered the rich history of Hudson & Essex and their contribution to the American automobile industry. I’ve followed this forum almost daily for a number of years and have posted questions on occasion. I’ve always received help. One big help was I had Walt Mordenti rebuild the carburetor which greatly improved the starting and overall running. I still have a few other items to sort out as time allows.

On to the 29 Essex. Another guy I know in Auburn has basically the same car and I’ve always liked the look of his two door rumble seat coupe. When I saw the original post about the car I emailed the owner and asked if I could have a look. Turns out the car was in Waterloo NY, about a twenty minute ride from me. Upon seeing it there was no question I had to have it. The car has some issues that need attention. I emailed Geoff Clark last week a few times with questions and concerns. Geoff answered my questions and none of the issues seem insurmountable. The seller told me the following. The carburetor overflows on occasion. Geoff indicated it was most likely the float being damaged from ethanol blend fuel and can be repaired. Geoff also indicted the carburetor should most likely be rebuilt completely. The muffler has a hole in it; I don’t see this as much of a problem. The front lever type shocks are shot and have been removed from the car. He still has them and will go with the car. Geoff advised that the originals are single acting type and I’d be better off refitting the car with the double acting type and telescopic types on the rear. The passenger side of the car has pitting on the door and fenders as a result of it being splashed with calcium used to weight tractor tires years ago when it was stored in his grandfathers auto repair shop. This is one thing that I think I’ll have to address. There is a spot between the roof section and main body on the passenger side were a mouse had built his nest and it had corroded through. Probably have to deal with this as well. The rumble seat has been removed. Seller has the seat part but lost track of the seat back. Geoff advised that this could be remade without to much problem. The seller has a spare wooden wheel, other parts and documents related to the car that will go with the car. I must say that I’m as giddy a kid at Christmas. I’m sure I’ll be asking for counsel as I proceed with needed repairs and maintenance. Just want everyone to know that my plan is to keep both cars as original as possible. As I’ve come to hear lately they are only original once. I paid $6,250.00 for it, which personally I consider a reasonable price for this piece history. Hope I haven’t been to long winded.
    Regards, Tom

Welcome aboard Tom. You've just joined the greatest bunch of car nuts you ever saw. Must be something right about the H-E-T club as I've been around a few years and found it to be a great bunch to be with. As the logo says "Come for the cars; stay for the people". This is a car club where the line between which is better - the cars or the people - is very, very thin. It really is a big family that likes Hudsons, et al. Each meet is a family gathering to renew old friendships and make new ones. You may find some a bit stand-offish when you first meet them - but once they realize you're going to be around a while, they'll thaw out. You've already interacted with Geoff Clark - there are many more willing to jump into the pond with both feet!!

Why not start off with a biggie - bring something to the French Lick Springs International meet in July - we'd love to meet you and see whatever you bring. Don't worry about all shiny and beautiful. They're all beautiful no matter what condition they are in.

  • Hi Tom, I'm glad to see that the Essex will be staying in the area! I'm also glad you are going for the preservation instead of restoration, or worse, hot rodding (being a coupe) It is such a low mile vehicle, as is your awesome '35, and together they will make great example of what superior products Hudson manufactured!....Best of Luck!

Good to see another Essex Coupe owner on the forum. They are a great car, even have a mother-in-law seat at the back. Let me know if you need photos as the 29 is not much changed from my 28!!

35 Terraplane, Tom, congratulations on your 29 Essex. As stated lots of help on this forum. I also have a friend (club member) That has a couple of parts left over from his 29 Essex coupe, (contact me for his info) I had posted about the local chapter, then looked at our roster and realized that you are a member so I edited this post. Hope to see you at some of our functions.
