Bands are loose as a goose!

OK, before I break something...
I bought a 53 HH with dual range H53 Hydramatic, car was far from running condition. Engine all reassembled, and I changed all external gaskets and seals on Hydramatic. The problem is the previous owner loosened up the front and rear bands so they are way off spec. I do not have the two tools necessary to set the bands from inside. Question: Is it possible to get them close by starting the engine, idling, and turning IN until RPM DROPS? (reverse of usual technique). I could do this for each, then go through normal external adjustment procedure. Any downside to this? Any damage I could cause? If so, then I need to locate these two tools as described in the manual Any help appreciated.
Hudsonly,
Dave

Call Gus Souza in Chicago and present your questions. Six 3 zero Two 3 one 7764

  • I agree, Gus Sousa is the guy to go to for questions regarding Hydramatics and Hudsons as he continues to rebuild these old GM transmissions. Gus is the tech advisor of our Chicago-Milwaukee Hudson chapter. We had our annual Hudson tech session with Gus this past Sunday (Jan. 26) at member John Otto's home. There, Gus provided answers to all of our Hudson engine, electrical and of course, Hydramatic questions (he informed us that there were many different types of Hydramatics used on stepdown Hudsons, not just one or two).

If you are in the South East. Goggle Henni at Greenville Transmission Clinic in Greenville S.C. He is a HET member and AACA. Knows HydraMatics well. Done one for me and doing another now. He is equipping this one with an external dip stick, so I don't have to tear up the carpet to check fluid.

There are a couple of hydramatic transmission manuals in the online library. Go to:
    http://hetclub.org/burr/lithomepage.htm
and click on "Manuals" under the 1948-1954 link. The 1954 manual is probably the one you need.

Thank you Mr. Burr. I have the 52 manual as well as the 53-54 update but neither seems to address my quandry. Thank you though
