Ranco heater valve

I am putting in my rebuilt Ranco valve and have looked up previous discussions on routing the heater hoses for this valve and have read conflicting posts. I get the part about from the head to in of the ranco valve (mine actually says "in" on the curved connection) but many posts say out(of the ranco valve) to the bottom of the heater core and some say the opposite. In a tech service bulletin (TS of the 77-16) it shows the route to the bottom with the top of the heater core outlet going to the pump. What shall I do? Terry

  • This how I did it and believe to be correct. Appears my photos did not load... The way you describe is correct.

The hose from the cylinder head goes to the far right on the ranco valve, the left hose goes to the top of the heater core and the lower goes back to the water pump. This makes the complete circulation of hot water through the heater when the interior control is set to hot.
  • OK. If you want to follow the OEM way of routing the hoses it goes as follows: Hose (or steel tube) from water pump goes to upper heater core pipe nipple. Hose from cylinder head goes to copper nipple on Ranco valve. (The copper one that is curved). Hose from Ranco straight copper nipple goes to lower heater core nipple.
  • I install all ranco valves this way and it's the best way, heater get warm sooner and the setting work perfect. Head to far left on ranco valve, right connection to top of heater core, bottom back to the water pump. Walt.
