1947 Hudson Pickups find a new home.
Recently I posted a suggestion that those of us that have multiple Hudsons or projects setting around too perhaps consider making them available to someone wanting a Hudson to drive or to rejuvenate a project into a driver.
I followed my own suggestion to sell some of my vehicles and put an ad in Feb. California Inland Chapter New Letter to sell two of my three 1947 Hudson Pickups. I missed the WTN cut off date for next issue. I had recently sold my 34 Chevy and 1969 AMX. On Monday Feb 3rd I get a call from Randy Peterson inquiring about the trucks. After all the discussions he says he wants them. My surprised reaction was: "YOU WANT BOTH TRUCKS?" He replies, "yes and will call you later".
Thursday I get a call from Randy, who lives north of San Francisco, he will be at my house at (8 am) Friday to get one. On arrival he inspects the truck in the back yard I've had for over twenty years while collecting parts and still setting not finished and looks at some of my parts. I have to remove a fence and I'm waiting for my carb for my Hornet to return from rebuilder before I can get the truck out. He pays for both trucks and some parts, then we go 30 miles to my son Rick's shop, O'Dell KUSTOMS AND FABRICATION where the other truck is located to load it on his trailer. This is the 150 inch wheel base stretched frame truck I bought last year from the George Lauder estate. Andy looks this truck over and we load it on the trailer. I take him to lunch and we had some good conversation about his plans for the trucks. I give him some sources for parts and he departs for home. I called Randy Satuday to see how his trip went. He hit heavy rain most of the way home and it was still raining on Sat. Later that day Randy calls me, since it was still raining he is researching past ownership background of each truck. I gave him all the information I knew on both trucks. He already new more background info. on the truck he picked up than I did because of papers he found in the glove box and behind sunvisor. More good conversation and he tells me he stopped on his way home to look at another 47 Hudson PU, a blue and white pickup for sale, it was out of his budget and that there will be a tow truck at my house Monday to pick up my other truck. His plans at the moment are to remove the 49 Ambassador engine out of truck he picked up and install 308 Twin H engines in both trucks and replace stretched frame with original stock frame.
I liked very much having these trucks especially my first Hudson, a PU, but I'm happy I did this. Two trucks will now be back on the road rather than wasting away in the back yard.
Anyone with rust repair needs, in the So. Cal area, give Rick a call at:
O'DELL KUSTOMS AND FABRICATION
661-250-7922.
26845 Oak Ave Suite 15
Canyon Country, Ca. 91351
Some of the rusty cars he has repaired were so eaten away with rust when I saw them I thought he should have passed. I am impresses with what he did to bring them back to life. Just a plug from a proud father.
Bettie has laid down the law. I have to get the third truck running and back on the road. First plan of attack, check the brakes and repair as needed. Then engine needs. Body and interior are ok except 16 years under 12 tarps, the heat lifted the paint off much of the body and dash.

Lee, you did not mention the brougham that your son bought from the George Lauder collection? Does he have it on the road yet? Will we see it at the Western Regional?0

Hi Brownie
Rick still has the brougham parked in his garage. Cleaned it up a little. Not running and won't make the Western Meet. Every time I go to his house and see the car I desire to see it on the road in beautiful condition. At the present he is focused on his business and new baby boy which both are doing very well. He recently moved into a larger facility, more than double the space he had before. And it is full of cars being worked on. I hope Rick, Christina and Jamison can make the time to attend the Western Regional.
Bettie and I have our reservations made.
Thanks for asking.

Today the car transporter arrived around 3 pm this afternoon to load up Andy's second pickup purchase. The transporter trailer brushed the power pole as it turned into the alley next to my house. Randy calls to see if the PU is left yet as we are pushing the PU to be loaded on trailer. This 47 Pickup was my 1st Hudson I bought before I knew there was a Hudson Club. Now I have some working room. I'm down to a 47 Hudson PU, 52 Hornet, 54 Hornet perimeter frame with suspension, 64 El Camino and daily driver 95 Taurus. After the PU is loaded I give Randy a call to let him know the driver says it will arrive 4PM tomorrow then we talked more about his plans for the trucks. It was a little let down to see both truck leave but I'm glad I did it because I believe Andy will get them finished. Also, he is sending in his HET membership

This is a good post Lee. Your intentions and dreams will still be met, another Hudson will be on the road. I can relate to this all very much, but from Randy side as I have begged and pried a few Hudsons out of the hands of Hudson collectors/hoarders, and have restored them and got them back on the road. My 46 truck took me years of begging. I keep the past owners updated and they are all happy. Its hard to let go of our dreams, Good on ya.

I let my 52 Hornet go after arguing with myself for a year. I just couldn't do it justice. Took a 51 parts car with it. The 52 is getting freshened up by a younger man, and some of the 51 parts are showing up here and making it possible for other Hudsons to get on the road. I feel good about it. I had it 11 years and made it better than when I got it.
I'm using some of the money and more time to finish the 40 coupe, (see post re interior and glass) refresh the 49 Commadore, cool the 47 Pickup with the new (39) 254, and do some needed work on the 36 Terraplane. Still have a 49 to sell, and a 49 and 46 to scavenge for parts for somebody, and scrap the rest.
