Pertronix Question

I have directed these questions to PerTronix, but I don't expect an answer within a few days.. Perhaps someone has "been there and done that".

I have Pertronix Ignitor P/N 1587P6  in my 49 Hudson 8.   It seems to be working O.K. with a stock 6 volt coil.. I got the bright idea to boost the spark. Perhaps help the starting and maybe increase fuel mileage. So I ordered the Flame Thrower coil P/N 45001.This is a .6 ohm primary which is about 1/2 the stock 1.6 ohm. Should yield about 45K volts.  One of the resources on the Internet listed it as useable with the basic Ignitor I have.  Upon receipt of the coil, I found that the instructions said it should not be used with the basic Ignitor. BUT it also said it is 12 volt. Sooo. I am not going to install it until I get assurance that it won't draw too much current and blow the Ignitor. Anyone have first hand info?

Call Petronix and ask them.  All we can do is guess at the correct answer.  When I've dealt with them they were always helpful and even replaced a Flame Thrower that started leaking shortly after I purchased it.

Hey Dave. We are running a Flame Thrower coil with the Petronix ign. It is 6 v. pos. ground. We have it hooked up the way they show you in the instructions. Do not use the resistor. You use the resistor on a 12 v. system. The best guess I have is the Flame Thrower is a 6 v. coil. On the other car we are running a stock 6v. Hudson coil. We can not tell any difference in the performance of either car.  Hope this helps.   L Hud

I got the reply  from Pertronix.

The problem was that the literature said that the Flame thrower coil (Flame thrower II)  P/N 45001 was listed as compatible with the 1362 Ignitor. Which is the 6 volt pos. gnd. module for the Hudson  8 Autolite  Distributor  #  IAT-4009B. So I ordered one. It has a primary resistance of .6 Ohms.

Upon receipt of the coil, the literature enclosed said it was NOT to be used with the original Ignitor (which I had) nor used on a stock system. It was designed to be used on the Ignitor II (which is not available for this distributor).and capacitive discharge systems.

The response was that it IS compatible if used on the 8 cyl. pos. gnd. 6 volts.

    They "recommend" suppression plug wires.

End result is very quick starting! perhaps an increase in gas mileage?  I have yet to increase the plug gap by another .005

The Pertronix Ignitor I used in my 262 was perfectly reliable over many years. Not so much for the Model A Ford. I had two of them die. I understand that Pertronix does no longer makes them, but sold the rights to another company. I don't know that for a fact, but Pertronix refers you to someone else if you have a problem.
