How do I tell apart the later 30s 8 cylinder heads? 35 heads are obvious with the prominent water tube, but how do I pick which is a 36, 37, 38 etc head?

Here are a few photos of my 36 Hudson 8.  Not sure this helps but if you have some questions I can answer them--or take more photos?

The heads are interchangeable from 1936 to 1952.  They all use the same gasket. The Cast iron heads are lower compression, and the  alloy heads are high compression.  There maybe  differences in the water temperature fitting on Step-downs for '51-52.  '36 heads had "HUDSON" in raised letters along the top, later heads may not have this.

Geoff, I think that on a 35 engine I have a 36 head and also a later water pump. Can I still use a 36 - 52 head gasket with that combo? What is different about a 35 head gasket?

You are correct Bob.  That is definitely a '35 engine according to the number, but has been modified to take the later head and pump.  you can see where the water jacket has been welded to take the different outlet. It was probably fitted into a '36 or later car, as the 34-'35's had the radiator bottom outlet on the left side.  the gaskets are different only in the shape of the water passages.  '36 onwards had holes,  the earlier had shaped spaces in the gasket to match the cylinder head water passages. You can use either gasket without problems.

Thanks Geoff. This is the radiator that came with the car, hopefully its the correct Hudson radiator. Is it compatible with the engine as is or do I need to alter the radiator and/or engine to get them to work together?

That will work fine, providing it is not blocked!   The  bottom outlet is in the correct position.

I have a 39, now in the 47 pickup, a 40, in the Victoria Coupe,  and stepdown eight, which had an aluminum head when I got it.  I sold the Al head and replaced it with a cast iron because it did not have the 'Hudson' logo, altho I had no problems with it.  Had it in the 'Hornadore' for 2 years while rebuilding the 308.

All the iron heads I have, including an extra, have the raised 'Hudson' logo
