Can you post pictures of the stuff you have before you sell them? I have a pump/bracket and a ram, and maybe the pitman arm(not 100% sure if correct). I have thought about making the other parts, but it would be easier if I knew what they are supposed to look like (and maybe dimensions)........My wife said she would drive a Hudson if it had power steering so I have been gathering parts for awhile.

This is a subject that comes up often. Due to the lack of original parts, several have made up ps systems with modern parts. Has anyone done this and been happy with the results long term?
    Is it duplicatable?

Contact Walt Morenti, he installed a rack and pinion from a GM car. I believe he said it was from  88-89 Buick Lesabre?,, made brackets to mount to front crossmember, etc. I'm sure Walt would help, Call him.

I don't think Arkie would "Clabber up" a Hudson with that rack and pinion stuff. LOL
I finally got Walt to admit that he changed his front sub frame to a Mopar. so his mods do not refer to a Hudson front Subframe. I did manage top mate a GM rack with the Hudson suspension. But would never do it again.. too much work!

My 46 pickup has a rack and pinion from a Pontiac installed on stock Hudson suspension, but it was done before I bought it. Whoever did it had to install a universal on steering shaft. When I had a problem with the rack, I just replaced it with another GM rack.

I would be interested in  "the pitman stop screw bracket, and the ram to frame bracket, and the spacers for mounting the stop screw bracket and steering box to the frame." I installed a 54 PS setup in my 53 Hornet-it works good--we had to make a frame bracket. But did not install a stop screw bracket or steering box spacers. I would be interested in buying these from you or seeing some photos or getting some advice.

The setup works great when underway--but I still can't turn the wheels much when car is stationary. Others on this forum have told me I should be able to. Could this be part of my problem?

Hey, I started this thread looking for a power steering set up for my Hornet Special.   And Dave is right. I would never clabber up a Hudson with some rack and pinion mess.  I'm not into reinventing the wheel.

Arkie, Ray Barker did a write up on power steering using more modern boxes. This could could be an alternative if you can't find a Hudson assy. Just a thought.

    Ken,

Thanks to you and all the other Hudsonites for suggestions on my PS--once this crazy winter we are having in New England ends I'll get my Hornet to a local shop to sort this out. I suspect the "rebuilt" pump or ram I purchased may not be 100%.

Where did you get the pump and ram?
I send out my PS rebuild needs to Lares Corporation. Just sent them the Wasp steering box for rebuilding.

I bought the whole setup from a guy in washington state--off ebay. Works much better for me than manual steering---but I suspect not 100%. Just spoke to Lares--they get $200 to rebuild pump and $440 to do the ram.
Once we pressure test the pump I'll know where to begin.

My experience with Lare's was outstanding. The parts look and work like new. The prices have gone up since my last cylinder was done a few years ago. A sign of the times I suppose.
  • Will need to find the pump and the pulleys in order to complete the set up I'm getting from Kenneth.  PM me if you have these items for sale please.
