Kantor is now selling new plunger style lifters used in the '56 308. Hallelujah.

Details? I still only see mechanical lifters listed on their website. I have a hydraulic set to send out for rebuilding, but would be very interested in new. Thanks.

Is it a direct change out to the earlier engines?

No. You would need the '56 hydraulic "7X flat top" cam. It is a regrind of the '54 "chain stretcher", same number, but with a different profile. BUT!!! I need to recheck because I just found out that the lifters are for a S8 Packard. I am buying one to check against my used Hudson lifters, if they are the same, I'll let everyone know.

Got the lifter today from Kantor, too big. Both Flathead Caddy and Packard lifters are larger, but they are different from each other as well.

From previous discussions about hydraulic plungers on these pages, I'm sure it has been said that the plunger that Hudson used was very close in dimensions to those used in some Chrysler engines, I think the bores are the same but there is a slight length difference.

    Or is memory playing tricks?

I believe the Chrysler industrial flatheads have hydraulic lifters. Additionally, Lycoming (and possibly other) aircraft engines use our type of lifter. I have no idea of interchange at this point though...

I believe ;) I picked that up in the last big thread on this subject. But, I do know Lycoming used these type of lifters.

I heard that the early Chrysler hemi V8's from 51 to about 53 used the 2 piece lifter similiar to the 56 Hudson lifter.   I have never had one to look at or measure.   Also, Continental as well as Lycoming aircraft engines used hydraulics too.  Bruce

Chrysler used plunger style hydraulic lifters in the early 331 big hemi engine but gradually moved to the modern one-piece design. I found one during my restoration and it is the same as the Hudson. Because they eliminated the plunger style, none were reproduced. After much investigation I have concluded they are not now produced. Maybe some die-hard early hemi folks have them squirreled away somewhere.
