Speedometer noisy and swinging wildly

Jim,Look to see if there is a place to oil the speedometer. It would be where the cable attaches to the back of the speedometer. It might be a small hole or a piece of felt that gets oil. The Zoom Spout works great for getting oil up there.John Forkner0

Squirt some WD 40 into the back of the spedo where the cable attaches

Do as rare39 suggests. Probably the brass bushing that the speedo cable plugs into has not been oiled for a long time. Feel that extended part of the speedo housing, or look at it from above with a mirror, and you'll find a small (1/16 - 1/8" dia.) hole. Put two or three drops of 3-in-one or other light oil. Should fix it.0

Thank you, John Forkner and Park W. I just now saw the small hole you both mentioned. I hadn't known that it was there. I drove the car today and the speedometer is now working fine. Maybe the lube of the cable helped after all. I will be putting some oil down the hole when I get some oil. ( Would WD40 work? Just curious ). Thanks again. Jim Haugo0

J Haugo, WD40 is not really an oil. Best to use a light machine oil or even penetrating oil would be better than WD40. It will work in a pinch, but it won't last (evaporates fairly quickly).0
