'54 Jet Steering Wheel Removal

Hey all, I'm trying to remove the steering wheel on the '54 Jet. I've tried a steering wheel puller using the two holes on each side of the steering wheel hub nut.  I don't know what size bolt fits in the holes, I've tried 5/16 - 24... but it won't really screw in tight.  1/4 is too small.

I've managed to push the horn button deep inside the hub.

Any advice on how to get this steering wheel off?? I need to fill in some cracks and paint it!

Thanks,
m-

Always wear ear protection when removing a horn button........or disconnect the battery.

Use one of those sticky, thin rubber gloves and turn it counterclockwise. about this far.

The thread is, in fact 5/16 UNF, but you are likely the victim of a previous and less astute individual who used <Gr 8 capscrews for this job. A Gr 2 "butterbolt" or even a Gr 5 capscrew will stretch at the entry point of the threaded hole, de-forming the first few threads. Subsequent removal of the capscrew will restore the form somewhat but still makes it a pain to run a good one back in at a later date, i.e., when you wanted to.

If they're not too bad, chase it with a tap. If they're bad, chase it with a tap. Use a Gr 8 capscrew to avoid stretch. It may still take some judicious tapping to break it loose + penetrant.

    It should have read:
You are likely the victim od someone less astute who used capscrews that were < Gr 8. A Gr 2 “butterbolt” or even a Gr 5 may stretch under the tension and elongate just inside of the tapped hole, de-forming the first few threads. Although subsequent removal of the capscrews will restore the thread somewhat, it’s a pain to get them started later……which is now. About all you can do is chase them out with a 5/16-24 tap and proceed. A little penetrant and judicious tapping may be necessary to break it loose.

  • Thanks Frank, that's what I used... a 5/16 - 24.  But I couldn't get the dang thing to budge. So I'm letting soak in penetrant for a few days.  I'm worried I've killed the horn button.

The bolt on the steering hub went down INSIDE it and pushed the horn button about 1/4" .  I'm hoping to get the wheel off so I can restore it.

While the penetrant does it's magic, I'm going to look for a cover for the ashtray.  I have the inside part (the actual tray) but I need a cover.
