1922 Essex wiring

Guys, I need to confirm the polarity of the ground.  The manuals I have do not say if this car is positive or negative ground.  I did find a wiring diagram for a 1921 Delco system that is negative ground.  But, the 1922 is an American Bosch and I don't know if it is different.

Also I seem to remember there was a discussion some time ago that the wiring diagram for the 1922 Essex American Bosch system shown in the 1922 parts book is wrong.  Does any one have the correct diagram? or know where I can find one?  (and no the diagram does not show the polarity)

Thanks Jay

    It is negative ground.

Thanks, I assumed it might be as the Hudson 6 diagram dated 1923-1924 shows that.  My other concern was that the generator was getting warm and draining the battery since it is connected to the amp meter then to the battery directly.  I though this was odd and disconnected the battery.  I am still trying to resolve this issue.

On this model the generator charge goes through the ignition switch, so there should only be a drain  when the switch is turned on.

Interesting.  According to my research the 1920-1922 Essex used a # 161 Delco  generator.

On the Delco system you are correct the generator goes through the switch.  On the Bosch system the diagram for both the Essex and the Hudson show the one wire generator connecting to the amp meter then to the battery.  That said I agree it is safer to go through the switch assuming it can handle the amperage.  On the Delco system the generator control wire goes through the switch.  The Bosch system has a cutoff relay on the generator.

So bottom line in this case is to run the amp meter through the switch so everything is basically switched including the horn?  It might be worth putting a relay in place so the switch does not see all that amperage and burn up when you honk the horn.  Just thinking.

The number on the Bosch unit is Type 1217.  I believe this to be the original unit.
