Hi, I recently bought a 1936 Hudson Terraplane 4 coupe body . All I got was body, doors, hood and fenders. It did not have a Vin ID badge it was removed. How do I find a new one or replacement?

    Greetings!

Are you saying that this car's engine has four cylinders?  Does this engine say "Hudson" or "Terraplane" on the cylinder head?

I am not aware of where to go for a new serial number plate, but they may be available.

If you wish to know the serial number, it is stamped on certain parts of the car, and we can tell you where to find it.

No Jon, I believe the gentleman is saying he has a "4 passenger" coupe - which is probably the 4-Pass. rumble seat coupe.

There's a good discussion here at the Forum, on the matter of alternate serial number locations, along with a couple photos.  Go here:  http://openforum.hetclub.org/discussion/165815/1934-terraplane-vin#Item_7

I don't believe there will be a VIN # on any body parts. If you can contact the person you got them from he may be able to help you track down where the frame or rear end might be or previous owners that may help.. The frame will have the number on top of the frame at the right rear corner. The rear end will have the number on top of the right side axle housing.

If all else fails the DMV will issue a new one. It probably will not be like the original though.

Brownie Petersen can give you some information how to get new VIN #. He had to did with one of his cars.

    Good Luck

    FYI
    Just athought)
I believe I seen Repo alumimum Serial Plate to rivet onto the Right Front Door Pillar in the Club Store at the Nationals. All you need then is a tiny Number Punch Set to insert a VIN Number after practice on a soft pc of aluminum first, then apply for a lost Title with the Tracing and perhaps a picture. Different States have different Reg's on antique Registrations but many States dont even have a registar of very old Vin/Title Numbers...

(Number Punch Sets are available at most Swap Meets and maybe Harbor Frieght)....

The reality is that since you need a frame, drive train and various other parts the best method would be to purchase a nice parts car. One that comes with a title. It will save you a lot of time, money and heartache in the long run...

That's probably the best idea.  You might search the hotrod and streetrod websites.  Maybe join the H.A.M.B. and place a notice on their board.  Those guys like to mount bodies on modern chassis so you could get the whole chassis with engine, and mount your coupe on it.  Then the coupe body "takes" the serial number stamped into the frame.

Another possibility is to buy an absolutely derelict car, especially a 4-door sedan, that simply isn't worth restoring, and transfer your body onto the chassis.  Just make sure the frame isn't badly rusted.  It will be a lot cheaper to buy the whole darned thing rather than to look for a frame here, a rear axle there, and so forth.  (You'll end up paying through the nose to buy it piecemeal.)

mrYeska. Contact Tom Lynch at HETdreamtuck@yahoo.com (drop the HET)

He just bought 2 36 Terraplanes from a salvage yard and might be able to help you out.

MrYeska, you haven't said whether you're looking for an original frame or chassis on which to put your body.  Are you looking for one, or do you plan to put this on a modern chassis?

If you're "going original", here are a couple 1936's I stumbled on.  One's cheap, the other not so inexpensive, but either one might be a candidate for a transplant and would yield lots of extra parts for the changeover, as well.

    This one's a brougham (or 2-door sedan) in Texas, $6700, http://www.search-vehicles.com/detail/other-makes/Other-Makes-Good-1936-Hudson-Terraplane_251470486203.html

This one was advertised on the H.A.M.B., evidently comes with drive train, located in California, price was $1200 three years ago, may be long gone by now: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=613871

Tom Lynch is a good friend and has several 36 Hudson's/Hudson products. Drop my name when you speak with him and I can assure you that he can help you out with a lot more than you will ever need.
  • I would prefer an original chasis , thanks for the link.
  • Can a straight 8 fit in a coupe?

Yes, it was called the Hudson Deluxe Eight Business Coupe. It also came with a rumble seat. It would be on a 120 inch wheel base and called the 64 Model. The 3-passenger series on the same wheel base was called the 65 Model.

...In other words, you would have to purchase a chassis from a 1936 Hudson Eight (they didn't make Terraplane Eights in 1936) in order to use your coupe body AND stuff a Hudson eight cylinder engine into your coupe.

If you buy a '37 Terraplane chassis you can use the coupe body, but only use a six cylinder (basically the same in both the Hudson and Terraplane..

Of course, if you were able to purchase an old rusty (or wrecked) 1936 Hudson Eight, you could pull off the body, replace it with yours, use the existing Hudson hood and front fenders and of course you could use the donor car's 8-cylinder engine too.

So you have a number of options.
