Does anyone know what the redline on a 262 is? Also are there charts of the torque curve available? I have been unable to find anything online. Thanks

The 262 has a built in rev limiter, commonly known as "Valve Float". The 308 has an infamous limit at about 4900 rpm +or-, commonly known as "disintegration". I have experienced neither but that's the rumor.
    "Redline"..........now that's funny.

Okay for a more proper term, what would be the correct limit for upper rpm operation with a 262? Say if I were going to mark a tachometer or something like that. I am not interested in grenading a motor rather just looking for a rule of thumb.

The torque chart or something to that effect would answer the question as well because I would also like know where the power drops off at. We have ruled out 4900 or anything south of that so what's a good number? It's been a long time since I have had a running Hudson and I don't really remember any specifics about driving it.

    FYI
I  have no therory except a general rule of thumb that the longer the crankshaft stroke the lower the power curve..

Maybe this will help...Once a Track made us remove a stock 308 and install a 262 to help 'level the playing field' against flathead V8's, so we lowered the gear ratio then reved the 262 a little higher and was still pretty competitive..
Forgot to mention that we installed 2" Intake valves, larger carbs, and milled the head on that 262....

There are a number of Hudson engine builders in the HET club. Some of those folks visit this forum on occasion. Your question seems to be pegged to a project in being or mind. So, I suggest you contact the following for advice on your question:

    Ivan Zaremba
    Randy Maas
    Ralph Alden

Those people on the list are members of the HET CLUB and contact information for them is available in the club roster.

    Good Luck with your project
  • I don't intend to steal this thread but I love hearing Ol Racer talk about his racing days.
Chuck, so even with all the popular Offy and Edelbrock heads, duel and even triple carb set-ups, the flathead Mercs with the longer stroke than the Fords, these guys couldn't stay with the 308 on the circle track?...k

Basicly boils down to camshaft range.  Suspect the power curve goes south around 3900 on a stock cam.

Wouldn't the 308 suffer from the same valve float as the 308 since it uses the same valves and springs? Would the 5000 rpm still apply to the 262 since the stroke is different?

Keith briefly so not to get further off track on this Thread, Our local Track ran Stock appearing V8's with 1 carb & headers. (No visible Mod's allowed) Flathead's were most popular with a few Old's 88, a Lincoln V12, and few Chty Spitfire 6's. The Hornet easily dominated so they tore us down often warping the head, then made us remove the Twin H before mandating installing a 262 before finally barring us completely after won with the 262.. Then went modified Racing elsewhere against big Stroker Ford/Merc's using the late Jack Clifford's Equipment. However, believe it or not, the 'very fastest' Modified's actually ran 'big' Hornet Motor's with triple log manifolds (in Ford, Chevy, & Plymouth coupes) for Yrs until Tracks dropped the Class in favor of Sprint's & Late Models....

The following pictures are of a 56 or 57 Hudson cut down to run circle track, (at present can not find the pictures of the full car body)  that has a 308 installed with a triple carb set up.  Last is a picture of a manifold made from cut Hudson manifold and square tubing.  Might be one of Chuck's "manufactured manifolds?
