    Welcome Jimmy!

Got all the parts? Whats the plans for the truck?

  • Thank you!

Well I'm not sure yet i dropped a 350 with a 350 turbo trans I have the hood and am missing one front fender but would like to find a pair. I'm thinking a street rod for now until i can find fenders to finish it. currently i am looking for a door hinge kit so that i can put the doors back on.

Welcome to the forum, Jimmy!  And, best of luck with your restoration or rodding.  (You'll note that we have a separate category for Hudson street rods so you will probably find a lot of valuable tips there.  I'd say that most of the members here, lean more toward originality but a good number of them have both restored and modified Hudsons.

Whatever you do, don't toss out any parts!  There is always a market for engines, transmissions, and other parts to keep the "original" Hudsons running.

If you haven't joined the H-E-T Club yet, you may want to consider joining:  http://www.hetclub.org/  We also maintain a separate forum there (this "Open" forum was part of a separate old-car website, and the Club inherited it earlier this year!).

And, there are some 40 chapters around the U.S. (membership optional) that organize local activities.

    Welcome,
Your Truck looks very solid to begin with....Fenders are available and can be Shipped "Greyhound"..... If you putting an Automatic in you will need to change the rear End. Ford 9" & 8.8 are good choice because of gearing and the wheels interchange with Hudson. I used a Ford Radiator but Mopar works too..  I install mid  80'S GM Tilt wheel & power brakes with swing pedal.   Ive installed early 80's S10 Seat & belts... Post pictures occassionally....

What's with the International Grill? My 47 is bone stock and original except for the 39 straight eight. I don't take a chair to car shows because I don't get to sit down. They love to hear it run. About half the people want to know when I'm gonna paint it and the other half tell me not to touch it.

Anyway, congrats for saving another one. Make sure you list it with the HET club along with your membership etc., or send me the info.

  • Thanks for the input guys, the international grill was just something we had laying around i have the original grill and hood however like i said I'm missing a front fender so i can't mount the hood on without that fender since the hinges are on the fenders. I plan to just run it without a hood and fenders for now until i can find the rest of the parts.

    Hi Jimmy, welcome aboard!

Good to have you.  I'm sure you'll find a wealth of information here.

You may also want to visit the Hudson Essex Terraplane Club website, and consider joining that Club - Members come for the cars, and stick around because of the great folks there!

As you're probably already aware, Hudson only made about 6000 pickups in 1946-1947, which means they are a bit harder to come by.  Not impossible to find, however it can be somewhat challenging.

The pickup fenders are somewhat different (lower, back where it meets the running board) - However if you have some metalworking skills (or know someone who does), you may be able to make the 'car' fenders work.

Good luck on finding what you need.  Don't have any 'second thoughts' about inquiring or asking about parts, advise or assistance - that's what this place is all about...

We hope you enjoy your time here at the Hudson Essex Terraplane 'Open Forum' -

There's a 1946-1947 group parts book and a 1942-1947 shop manual in the online library:

Don lives in Elliston, Virginia -- a bit of a trip from Houston! If you're still interested in shipping the fenders that distance, PM me and I can give you his phone number.
  • do you think these fenders would work on my truck
  • also i was wondering if you think that the steering wheel and steering box would be the same as the pickup

Not sure, but most of the stuff interchanges from the passenger cars to the trucks.  The exceptions would be the doors and rear fenders -- they have to come from a 1941 Hudson, I think.  I'm not sure about the front fenders.  Someone will pop in here, and tell you.

The steering box will work, but the fenders will not work.  The car and truck fenders are vastly different both at the cowl and in the front.  If you had truck fenders you could make them work with serious modifications, but in th eabsence of that, stick to the truck fender plan.

Allan, would 1940 or 41 passenger car front fenders work on the '46-7 truck?  Or are the front fenders exclusive to '46-7 trucks only?
  • Any suggestions as to where I can find door hinges?

You need new hinges or just new pins?
  • I need both. Upper hinges and the bottom piece.
  • Here is one of the doors that I need the hinge and pins for

Doc is correct, however, the '40 to '41 fenders would be easier to adapt to the '46-'47 pickup than the '46-'47 sedan front fenders.  Would need a little tender loving care to adapt the '46-'47 grill into the older style fenders.

Neat truck Larry. Looks like your truck is one log exceeding the weight limit. he he,.

Just go to the hardware store and get some bolts to use for the hinge pins. Get them long enough so you can cut the threads off.

Wouldn't the hinges be hardened?  If not, you might also look for clevis pins (which I don't think are hardened) at your hardware store.  Or it may be that hinge pins from a more popular antique car like Ford or Chevy, may be available from antique car parts suppliers.  After all, how many possible hinge pin diameters can there have been?

How is your truck coming along?

  • I have a spare set of fenders and a hood in California came with my 46 pickup. Mine is the rodded 46 project in another thread. I may even sell the modified set on it now
