Frank Hammer rescued it from a barn in Sacramento in the 1980s, sold it to Pete Booze who had it restored at Bill Albrights 1996-99 .

Seen the after pics and talked to Pete about this car before.  Thanks for posting the "before" pics.  What's the story with the '41 front end?

First of all I have to correct the large mistake above in re Bill Albright as he had ABSOLUTELY nothing, as in nada, to do with the restoration of this '39 Country Club 8 coupe! The restoration was begun by Frank Hammer, who I'd met when he lived in L.A., who then retired & moved up into the "Gold Rush Country" of central Calif. Frank had taken the body off the frame, cleaned the frame, and painted it prior to selling it to me as he'd gotten too old & weak to continue the work.
ALL of the restoration work of re-assembly was done by myself & fellow HETer & friend Buzz Stahl in Escondido. The paint & chrome work was done in Escondido too.
Upon close examination I have to say I don't believe the car with the partially completed '41 front end is the is the same car - take a careful look at the windshields. I put all new rubber in the '39 as you may be able to tell from the last photo above. Also look at the lower corners of the windshields of both cars; the '41 comes to a sharp point whereas the '39 is rounded.
After I completed the '39 CC8 bus. cp. (it had exc. original interior so it was left untouched) I sold it to a guy in Texas some 10-15 years ago.

Upon further careful examination: you'll notice the '41 (?) has fixed door vent windows (you can see the brace) whereas the '39 CC8 has the "disappearing" vent window. The '39 has long fancy belt moldings whereas there are none on the '41 (?). In '41 you could get the cars with or without running boards which this '41 (?) doesn't have & is missing the rubber cover that goes onto the front of the rear fenders (you can see the holes where it would be attached) whereas the '39s ALL have running boards.
In lieu of the above I'm certain they are not the same cars (whew, as sure had to think someone butchered that wonderful '39!).
As you can see the '39s have "teardrop" rear windows & from the photo of the '41 (?) it would appear to me to have the squared corners of a the 1 pc. it would have.
  • Well, all I know is on back of the photo where the car is being painted has Franks handwriting "at Albrights in Fontana"

And I do believe the "41" is a different car, I too had noticed the grill being different .

Hammer - your grandfather may have taken it to Bill's to have something done to it for him. For instance the engine is all wrapped up which is as it was when I got it.
I know longer remember the condition of the engine but I don't think we had to do anything to it other than put the manifolds, etc. back onto the block.
The top two photos taken at Frank's home in the Gold Rush Country (trees in background) loaded onto my car trailer, 3rd in a garage but I can't tell if that was Frank's or at Bill's emporium which I visited numerous times.
