Anyone know a new replacement number for the steering box shaft seal for a 6 cylinder box?
The original seal is made of leather National #50151.
It will be nice to keep oil in the box and off the garage floor.

  • I think that number is still good. Check with NAPA.  When it comes time to refill your steering box, don't use the gear oil Hudson recommended. Use John Deere Corn Head grease. Works great. Won't leak.

I'll second using the John Deere grease. I keep it inmy stock.

Does it come in a tube or jar?
  • It comes in a grease tube for a grease gun.
  • You can replace the old leather seal with a modern seal that uses nitrile instead of leather.  National # 50151S.  The S suffix indicates nitrile.   About 8 bucks at O'reillys, cheaper on ebay.

BigBoy, do you know if the National # 50151S is also the same application number for the long wheel base Stepdowns?

    Thanks Ken!

I want to double check the National p/n with you though, because someone else told me it uses a National 340356.
