"New" Remanuf. Water Pump, Why Is There A "Slit" on the top?

I believe this is a slit that originally had a wire clip installed to hold the bearing in place. Probably un-needed with the pressed in bearing. No lube required.0

Interesting. What method is used in the rebuilds to positively locate the bearing in the housing?0

The groove in the outer race becomes visible as the bearing is pressed into place as long as the rebuilder doesn't pass it up. I've always wondered what a rebuilder would do to extract a clip that is broken or rusted off as so many are.
Although that clip was used on all pumps of that design, I figured that the press fit, maybe with a drop of LocTite bearing mount, would be sufficient to do that job.
I have drilled/tapped a 1/4 hole, aligned with the slot/groove and used that for "insurance".

Modern throw-away pumps have a groove in the casing and bearing which is pumped full of epoxy, which set hard and locates the bearing. You could probably do the same with a Hudson one but I prefer to use the spring clip.0
