"New" Remanuf. Water Pump, Why Is There A "Slit" on the top?

Quick question. I've just put on a remanufactured water pump from Hudson Motor Company (Ace Auto) in Cincinnati.  Very nice guy and super fast shipping.

But there's a small slit (open part) on the housing directly on the top of the shaft.  Does this water pump need to be oiled or greased?

Thanks

I believe this is a slit that originally had a wire clip installed to hold the bearing in place. Probably un-needed with the pressed in bearing. No lube required.

Interesting. What method is used in the rebuilds to positively locate the bearing in the housing?
  • The groove in the outer race becomes visible as the bearing is pressed into place as long as the rebuilder doesn't pass it up. I've always wondered what a rebuilder would do to extract a clip that is broken or rusted off as so many are.
Although that clip was used on all pumps of that design, I figured that the press fit, maybe with a drop of LocTite bearing mount, would be sufficient to do that job.
I have drilled/tapped a 1/4 hole, aligned with the slot/groove and used that for "insurance".

Modern throw-away pumps have a groove in the casing and bearing which is pumped full of epoxy, which set hard and locates the bearing. You could probably do the same with a Hudson one but I prefer to use the spring clip.
