Trying to get the crankshaft pulley bolt out on a 51 hudson hornet 308.  Trying to replace seal and gasket around the timing chain.  IS this bolt rh or lh threaded?  Also any best practices on how to get this thing out?  Have tried an impact wrench with no good results.  Thanks

The bolt is rh thread. Turn counter clockwise to remove. There is a keyed washer behind the bolt that is bent against the flat on the bolt. Pry the edge of the washer up off the flat surface on one of the hex surface back to balancer so the bolt will turn.. I don't know if a electric impact gun is powerful enough. Or block the flywheel from turning and use a lot of muscle with a impact socket and looong breaker bar. A thin wall socket may crack and break.

    Good luck

I have an impact socket I bought many years ago to complete this task.. Crank up the pressure to drive the impact
  • Thanks all... got it out. Vibration damper was a challenge!  Did not want to go. I will post some pictures of what I found under the cover in a little while.

  • Here is what I found.  A timing cover put on with a gasket in a tube... obviously failed and was leaking oil badly.  The timing chain and pulleys looked good however.  Your thoughts?

    Thanks

Safety wire was put in wrong on one bolt. It should be put in to put pressure into a "tightening" direction.
  • Thanks Kerry,

I'll fix the direction of the wire on the top bolt before I button everything up.  Besides the wire issue am I wrong to assume it looks fine?

    Thanks again,

    FYI
The Chain appears tight in picture, however, try turning the Crank back & forth 'slightly' to be sure the Cam gear has no delay in movement..if so.replace it because Hudson's were known to wear stock Timing chains prematurely.
(Randy Maas has modern 'Double Roller' Chains that totally eliminates that problem)

I suggest turn the slide on crank 'Spacer' around so that the Seal has a new 'spot' on the Spacer and  recommend a National/Timken #450084 Front Seal
