Fuel pump leak

Guys,

The fuel pump on my 1940 started leaking today pretty steady stream. Does that mean I need a new gasket or does the pump need to be rebuilt? Is there an easy way for me to tell?

Thanks,

Marvin

Near positive you need a pump or rebuild.  Most likely the diaphram internal has split (broken) and the fuel is coming out the vent hole. Try Dave Kostansek @ 4four4 293 four oh 7 nine before 8pm Ohio time.  He list them in the WTN under parts for sale.

    Jim,

Thanks, I know Dave so I will get in touch with him.

  • I had the fuel pump in my 37 and the 54 pumping out fuel like it was going out of style this spring.  Turns out that the ethanol had eaten the gasket for the filter bowl completely.  All I had to do was cut another gsket out of rubber and the problem was solved.  Moral is - check your filter bowl gasket.

There is a GASKET mounting the pump to the block to stop engine oil leaks.
There is a rubber DIAPHRAGM pumping the fuel through the pump.

If you are leaking GAS, you need to replace the DIAPHRAGM:  its cracked.

Besure the rebuild kit you get works with recent ethanol fuels.
  • Where do you get the rebuilds kits from? AC or Carter for the step downs?

This source is probably the oldest continuous high quality supplier to the automotive hobby doing the largest volume.  That makes their kits the most fresh and competitively priced and they deserve our support.

There are also Hudson part suppliers handling kits and I don't doubt that some of them buy from Then & Now.
