Will a standard VR2 voltatage regulator work for a standard 51-54 Hornet.. ?  I looked at Rock auto and they have nothing for hornets but i put in 51 pacemaker and got a match .  Any thoughts ?

Harry there were two generators for the 51-54( 40 amp GDZ6001B),then about 2 months into 53, Hudson went to a 45 amp GGW4801B. The 45 amp will have a blue tag while the earlier one has a black tag. The 45 amp must have a matching VR... VBE-6104A ( blue tag) made by Autolite. The earlier 40 amp uses a Autolite VRP-6101B (black tag) . Napa VR-22 is the 45 amp crossover for the 45 amp... or Echlin VR-4.

Harry, which generator are you using?  You will cook an early generator if you try and poke 45 amps out of it.

Harry, as Geoff says the Vr-22 & vr4 will let the 40 amp GDZ generator crank up to 45amps.... bad deal. The Voltage Regulator needs to keep the output to 40amps. Try the cross over for the Autolite VRP 6101-B. According to my records Echlin VR-2 is correct for 1950- early 53. Also Standard VR-25 may be a 40 amp also. I believe the difference is the location of the Batt. Terminal on the regulator.

You can use the later regulator providing you adjust the maximum current output to less than 40 amps.  You would need to have the heater, radio, and headlights all on at the same time to   draw this amount.  entails bending the spring anchor on  the current coil (the centre one) so it has less tension.
