greasing throwout bearing

Don't be too zealous or you will pump grease into the clutch. I have been driving my Essex for 58 years and have never greased the throwout bearing. It gets enough lubrication from the clutch. Later models are sealed better though, so a pump or two every thousand miles is more than enough.0

Im curious, if Hudsons use a cork based clutch material, what sort of grease do you use? Id imagine the grease would have to be pretty thick so as not to leak out of an old seal for the cork to absorb? I am used to medium duty trucks, where I use Chevron EP-2 NGLI-2 grease for my roadranger throw out bearings behind Eaton ceramic clutch linings. Thanks,

OK. The clutch disk has either 90 (9 inch) or 109 (10 inch) short wine bottle corks pressed into holes in the disk, that get squeezed between the flywheel and the pressure plate. This is lubricated by 1/3 pint of fluid, held in by the pressure plate cover which is bolted to the flywheel and sealed by a gasket.
There is a seal on the outside of the throw-out bearing that prevents leakage out the back of the cover, and another on the inside that keeps fluid from migrating up the shaft.
The 'Hudsonite' fluid is sold by various people including Dr.Doug. Some of us use straight Dexron, others use their own mix.
The throw-out bearing is not positively sealed off from the clutch fluid. Too much grease pumped in from the zerk in the side of the tranny will get forced past the inner seal and get into the fluid. Not good.

If the throw out bearing were over greased would the recommended fix be to flush the clutch with kerosene or solvent?0

Thanks Ken. When I got my 35 in 2006 I saw the fitting and put a pump of grease in it. Did it again a few years later. I've never had a problem with the clutch and have drained and refilled it three times since 06. After reading this post got a little nervous. Thinking in the spring I'll flush the clutch and refill it.0

Seems another question here is, could any harm occur if you do not ever grease the throw-out bearing?

Yes, your throw-out bearing will go bad and you would have to replace it.Seems another question here is, could any harm occur if you do not ever grease the throw-out bearing?
