    Jon,

I clicked on the PDF and a photo of the part you're apparently trying to display (1930 generator) downloaded on my computer.

When I opened the PDF it showed a page from the maintenance/parts manual for a 1932 Hudson engine... page 174 of the manual.  What is it that the chap really needs... there are folks who frequent this forum who may have that part... ????

The part is apparently from the end of the generator shaft, toward the front of the engine.  I honestly do not know these 1930 engines very well.  I believe it is a coupling of some sort and I don't know why he found it lying in the engine compartment....or why his Hudson suddenly stopped running!

i have never seen a 1930 Hudson but it look like it might be for the generator to keep tension on the belt
like for adjustment. With the slot like just a guess

or a part from a starter

It is the  sliding joint coupling for the accessory shaft and timing chain sprocket.   I have one, every Hudson and  Essex from 1922 to 1932 uses this part, and it is  essential.  How do I get it to him?

    Geoff:

    1.  How to get it to him: do you have any friends in China who could drop it off?  LOL!

    2.   But seriously folks... would the fact that he found this piece in his engine compartment, suggest a specific scenario of why his car would have stopped, all of a sudden?  And, isn't this supposed to be within the housin near the front of the engine?  If so, how would it have migrated out, into the engine compartment?

    3.  Does this look broken to you?  Or is it possible that the bolt or screw holding it, just loosened up?

John,   There is a very clear picture of the generator drive system posted by Spencer Y of his black 1931 Hudson in the thread discussing the 1931 for sale.  Take a look.  Same as my 1932

AHA!  So, it appears that the broken part held by the hand in the photo, is just the tip of the iceberg!

The broken coupling is not the cause of the disaster, it is only the symptom.

Will a new housing alone, solve the problem?  And (should it be obtainable) is it easily installed?

This raises the question: why would the housing break, this far into the trip?  Was this breaking fairly common "back in the day"?  Or could it indeed be the result of the installation of that modern generator (which may have not been aligned properly)?

(Perhaps the tour should be continued in a schwannboot, which presumably has fewer mechanical parts to break....)

Ken, if we could send him a rebuilt ORIGINAL generator that might prevent this from happening again.  But I don't have one in my back pocket!  I have heard of companies which manage to fit alternators into the original generator housings, for the "authentic look" - maybe that would be a  plan?

Well, until someone is able to take apart the broken items and assess the situation, we won't know which parts they will need to set things to rights!

I assume those are cast iron castings and cannot be welded or brazed?

We don't know precisely what is needed yet.  I suppose we could ask around to find people with the early 30's 8-cyl engine parts....then find out later which parts are needed.

It sounds like he needs the entire housing and drive sprocket assembly.   I could do this, but I really need to get past this third hand stuff and communicate direct.  Can this arranged?

The fellow who is commenting on the HET Forum is a German who is assisting the owner driver of the car which is broken down in S West China.   The direct contact information that this fellow Patrick published there is

    Skype- ddborg
email is 123heinrichs@ddb.net   Remove the 123.  The lady who is driving this car is on a personal trip which will take her completely around the world in a 1930 Hudson Sedan. Part of that trip plan is a north south trip through NZ before shipping car to USA.  Of course predicated on fixing the current motivation problem.

Heidi Hetzer, 77, to drive from Perth to Sydney this summer as part of two-year trip

At 77 years old, successful Berlin businesswoman Heidi Hetzer does not fit the conventional mould of an adventurer.

But that has not stopped Hetzer from embarking on the journey of a lifetime, replicating the world’s first circumnavigation by automobile with her eight-cylinder 1930 Hudson classic.

No stranger to life on the road, the Berlin-based socialite has experience as a rally driver, car collector and dealer that should help her cross from Perth to Sydney this summer.

Having started her journey in Berlin on Sunday, the traveller aims to finish her trip at Brandenburg Gate in June 2016.

She will travel from Germany through Eastern Europe and Turkey, crossing Russia and China in September.

Hetzer then plans to drive through South East Asia before arriving in Perth, heading across to Sydney over the summer months before tackling New Zealand from north to south.

Transporting the car to California, she will traverse the United States then spend the second half of 2015 heading south through Mexico, Colombia, Brazil and Argentina before tackling North Africa, Spain and France on the home leg in 2016.

According to Patrik (who is not on the journey with Heidi), they got the car fixed and are continuing.

They are now headed south to Malaysia.  They had hoped to reach Australia by Christmas but since they lost several days in China, waiting for some connecting rods to arrive by mail, this may not happen on schedule.

I do hope they can resolve this situation with the mis-aligning alternator and the possible problem with the accessory drive (which may or may not be damaged; it's unclear what just happened).
