Firewall struts

There are two struts in the engine compartment that go between the frame and the firewall along the inner fenders with fabric connectors on the end.  The fabric on mine have completely degraded.  Does anyone have any advice on how I could restore these?

Ken's product is simple and fits nicely. Took all the guesswork out.

If you are financially challenged.. A piece cut out of the sidewall of a bias ply tire works pretty good.

    Aren't we all financially challenged....

Thanks for the quick response - Ken do you have these for sale?

What are these called and why are they "soft" mounts?

Also, there is a similar fabric strap between the firewall and the dash behind the steering wheel that has a fabric connector, does anyone make these?

They seem to me to like the human appendix - eminently disposable!

I am a bit baffled by your description of a fabric reinforced rubber strip between the firewall and the dash behind the steering wheel.

Me too.  But it won't be the first time I was baffled withn this thread.   ;)

I will attempt to attach a couple of pictures.

The support connects on the inside of the firewall at the top rigidly (the end of the two bolts that hold it to the firewall can be seen in the center of the left most picture under the hood above the horn relay).  The picture in the center shows it coming down from the firewall (upper left) and you can see the reflection off the steering column.  The fabric is shown in the right picture, two bolts on the steering column side two black rivets on the support side.  This is on a 50 model Commodore.  The support is just hanging there right now because the fabric is rotted away.

Your explanation makes perfect sense for reducing the tendency to create a resounding board out of the firewall for the two in the engine compartment.  I would assume the same logic holds for this in that it is a support for the steering column and dash with the ability to transfer that vibration into the firewall.

It looks pretty straight forward to replace, your knowledge of the other supports made me curious if you knew the answer here as well.

But you know what they say about curiosity....

I am not familiar with this under-dash strut on Hornets. Very interesting.

All my 49's   (three) have the "flexible" mount mentioned above.

Very cool thanks guys. I'm afraid my Hudson knowledge is limited to later stepdowns.

Funny, I was just thinking about how to make the
under-dash rubber described above for my 49.  I went out to look at my 52
and 54 and neither had the piece...
